Winter build off 2019 – Red

My intent is to butt the marker up to the binding.

I was just checking out your holly & ebony ric build and I think the same MOP blocks would look fine with a cream or off white binding. The body of that ric is kinda cream colored. The highest fret markers but-up against the body color and it looks good.

Clean, minimalist look; love it! Looks like you router-carved the top after the f-holes were cut. Some have advised on risk of tear-out near f-hole by the router. Looks like you navigated thru that successfully. Any techniques to share or pitfalls to avoid on this part of the build?

Put in the binding ledge, Glued in the binding (Sorry, no pic for that) carved the top wit some templates, and started to sand out the top.

1) I didn't back carve the top plate. This top is rather on the thin side.
2) I did multiple shallow passes to avoid tear out
3) Techniques for sharing - On the last build I did using these templates, I used wood screws in the pup cavities to secure the templates. This time around I used some threaded inserts and 1/4-20 machine screws. This worked much better because it kept the template in place better.

Thanks for the tips! Bookmarking this discussion for future reference, when I get to that stage of my build.

I think cream binding would look great on the cat-eyes.

Got the round overs on the back done.

I was seriously considering changing the color from red to amber. But while I was doing the roundovers, I got some chipout in a small section. It didnt go real deep, but too deep to sand out. So I'll just leave it and let the schellac fill it in. It will hardly be noticeable if I keep the color red, so I no longer entertain the notion of amber.
