Winter build Off 2019 – Tic40

My mashup will be made up of the following design elements:

· Peavey T40
· Gibson ES330 size (14.5” lower bout)
· Semi hollow construction
· Carved top
· Rickenbacker styled neck
· Bolt on neck

Specs:
Body: Roasted Norther Ash with Flamed Norther Ash Cap
Neck: Roasted Norther Ash with Roasted Norther Ash finger board
Scale lenght: 33"
Strings: 4
Electronics: ACG Filter
Pups: Gibson Thunderbird
Bridge: Hipshot Supertone
Tuners: Hipshot Ultra Light
Color: Natural with black binding

OK, this seems like a rerun with a different set of actors.

Cut out the general shape with the bandsaw, used the template to fine tune the edges, and a peek at the back. I got a little chip out on the lower horn on the backside. That should disappear with the round over.

Updated design.
I wasn't fully intending on entering this, but I really like the body style, and it seems to be playing with the Ric portions well, so what the heck. (I was intending to enter 2 LPDC's. a 4 and a 5 banger)
Made Neck 5 string width and put in Cat's eyes.
Probably won't use the 2Tek bridge though, which is what's in the drawing

I'm thinking 2 Lace Sensors in conjunction the the ACG filter should provide a wide range of sonic landscapes, which the T40 is good at
I need to get the electronics drafted so I can finalize the F hole locations

Update

Aligned my inner cut template, hogged out the center, and filled cavities with schellac. Sure wish I remember what that schellacmix was. I just using it to fill the pores in the cavity, but I sure do like the color.

The body as shown comes in at 4.1lbs.

Stupidity update

So after I poured the shellac into the cavities, I realized I did a couple things wrong. I poured too much into one of the cavities, and I didn't set it on a level surface.
I went back to it about 10 minutes after pouring the shellac, and saw that it was pooling at one end. I put the body on a tilt to have it redistribute it self, but that was too late. I I collected the blob with a paper towel. I'll sand it down and try again. The other one turned out nice!

OK, got a little done on this

Did the glue clamp thing yesterday. If ya take a close look at the neck clamped down in the background, you'll see that I glued the 2 pieces together incorrectly. Discovered this after taking the photo last night. So I sawed it in half, squared up the board, and reglued them back together.

The plan for the neck is to cut off the top layer show and use that for the fingerboard. Cut off another section and use that for the neck.

I may look for a more attractive piece of ash for the FB

Goal for this build is to use all ash!

Update:

Changed the design up a bit. Decided to go with this as a 4 stringer. Couldn't find a bass bridge that I liked that I could use on a carved top. I really wanted to use a Hipshot style D, but after weeks of asking Hipshot for dimensions and not getting them, I decided to move on.

Cut the neck pocket, from the glued together ash, I cut off a piece for the neck, and a piece for the fingerboard as well, and squared up the pieces in my planer. I have an extra neck blank (background).

Also, had to get a new trim router. The Rigid trim router that I have been using for years has gradually developed a problem. The cam level that locks the height adjustment is made of a soft metal, and has worn down to the point where when I'm routing, the cam lock will unlock, and the bit will drop a bit. Really annoying when I'm trying to level something on my router sled or do a neck pocket. I'd buy a new cam lever, but rigid says it's out of production

Update.

Glued on the headstock wings, shaped the neck to fit in the pocket, and another clamp farm for the FB onto the neck.
