Better late than never, right? At any rate, I'm going to give it a legitimate shot, I know that I'll be cutting it close, so I'll have to adhere to a really strict schedule.

I don't have a clever name for this build like everyone else seems to have... what's up with that? Maybe I should just make up something exotic like, Quimsgefaaerden II (revisited). Bah! I'll name it later. On with it, time is literally wasting away. :D

So, let's get the business stuff out of the way. This will be a partial build due to the fact that the neck beam was assembled back in 2018 when I built my first neck through 5 string. The renewal / rebirth aspect is mostly to do with this being a revamp of this particular bass design and partly about the sawed up trees in my garage being reborn as instruments. :smug: (yeah, that's a stretch, I know)

As I mentioned, this will be a slightly redesigned version of that first neck through design. That original bass was my idea of a "hippy sammich" styled build that I could never afford. It's sort of an idealized mash-up of everything that I've liked from a myriad of boutique builders.

Here is the original build for reference:

There were a few things that I got wrong the first time, like the headstock dimensions were a bit too narrow on the first one. That issue made me alter some of the details that I wanted. I have also tweaked a few of the body lines to make the overall shape a bit more sleek.

OK, here is the "wood pile" shot. You can see the neck beam near the rear. There are a few potential top or back woods... I still am completely undecided on what I'm using in this build except that I'm using that figured ebony for the fingerboard.

Here is my wood stash. I have too many choices in some ways. I need to make a decision soon.

Here are the preliminary specifications:
  • Fretless
  • Tapered Multi lam neck through (Wenge, hard maple, bloodwood)
  • 34" Scale (the original was 35" but I don't want that much tension on this)
  • Figured Gabon ebony fingerboard
  • Top laminate will cover entire top
  • Body wing woods TBD
  • Matching headstock laminates
  • Norstrand Big Splits
  • Volume, blend, tone passive circuit
  • Individual bridges
  • Hipshot tuners
  • Tusq nut
  • Finish TBD
OK, that's it for now. I'll post more details later. I have new outlines printed, but I still need to make new templates, so a lot of busy work in the next few days. Fingers crossed.

I remember watching the build thread for that 5 stringer, IIRC you used real Mohawk Piano Lacquer which turned out awesome. It's a great looking bass, Im subbed for this one for sure.

Thanks! That was an exciting build and I'm very happy to get back to building some basses... I was feeling a bit guilty posting Telecaster builds (shudder) here on LC. :roflmao: Not positive what I'll do for a finish this time, certainly not enough time for lacquer. I'll probably do oil or a hard wax finish.

By the way, every time I see your user ID here on LC, this instantly springs into my head. :D

Mostly I enjoy the part where he said -

and then he shows this incredibly beautiful bass. :roflmao:

Exactly! I hate overachievers....

 I will admit that the first bass turned out really nice, but I still feel like I missed the mark a bit. I would consider this iteration a refinement of my original mental image. Hopefully Quimsgefaaerden II (revisited) comes closer.

Oh man, I know!!! I have no idea how to type them in... do I need to switch keyboard layouts or something? Now I feel like I've totally dropped the ball. :D

Yes, there are keyboard shortcuts, and some apps have utilities to insert special characters, but I found the easiest way is to search the web for some word that has them, then copy and paste from there.

A handy selection für das copy und paste. Mac method, option-u and the letter, but if it's not allowed you end up with an umlaut over a space followed by the unapproved-for-umlaut letter - ¨Q rather than Q with an umlaut over it.

ä ë ï ö ü and sometimes ÿ

Ä Ë Ï Ö Ü and sometimes Ÿ

Or applying the standard "I recall nuf-fink from German class worth speaking of" "throw an ümlaut on it if you can" approach:

Qüïmsgëfääërdën ÏÏ (rëvïsïtëd)

Hëävÿ Mëtäl approved, I'm sürë.
