I’m not sure that argyle sweaters are technically nerdy, but I’ve been wanting to make a guitar with this pattern for years, so now is as good of a time as any, right?
This is inspired by this cutting board that I stumbled on a picture of.
I’m not copying that pattern exactly, but it’s what made me think of doing this in wood.
You know how people who make cutting boards cut, glue, flip, cut, glue, flip, etc until they come out with a cool pattern? I was hoping to figure out how to do that, but I haven’t been able to find a way to do that with an argyle pattern.
I still have a little bit of planning to do on this one, but we’ll get there.
Here’s my pile of wood and parts.
I’m using camphor burl and birdseye maple for the argyle pattern, with African blackwood to outline the diamonds (if I have enough, if not, I might switch to another dark wood).
The body is going to be swamp ash, the neck will be roasted maple with makore, curly maple, and fumed oak veneers, and the fretboard will be African blackwood.
I’m using Hipshot hardware and Bare Knuckle pickups (still in the mail because I took forever to decide which set to order).
This is a scratch build in the non-bass category.
