Wiring gone wrong

Quite a rat's nest you've got there. Looks like you're doing OK so far.

As you've already said, starting from scratch with new components would be best. Also said, soldering skills are essential but easy to learn. In addition, stripping insulation is an operation where many amateur techs screw up, as is evident in view of your disconnected wires. Obviously the previous "tech" was not very skilled. Since it's for a friend, I'd be reluctant to volunteer to do the whole job. If you have little experience, even a simple job like this might be challenging. It's been suggested that a wiring job like this could be done in 10 minutes, and it probably can, but not without a working knowledge of what's involved, and prior experience. I do this kind of work myself, and take as much time as necessary to do a good job.

I'd tell your friend that it would be best to take it to a "real" tech, and at least get an estimate before starting it yourself. It may not be as expensive as you think. If not, I'd at least make him hang out with me while I was doing the repair, both for his help and to let him know what's involved.

Feel free to keep asking questions.

Good luck!

Tom
