Hi everybody.

In approximately two hours I'm going to make my debut as a lead singer . Well, not that I'm going to become one. Two of my bandmates have another band, but it's just a trio (Guitar - bass - drums) in which all of them share the vocal duties (No lead singer) and none of them are vocalists. A few days ago, one of them sent me an e-mail: "Hey, we have a gig next Saturday and we'd like you to play a couple songs with us". I replied: "Of course! Cool!" One of the songs is RHCP's "Hump De Bump", with the drummer on lead vocals...

And I thought, "well, if these guys are singing, I can give it a try as well" so I told them: "Hey, there's a song that I've always wanted to sing, specially because the lead singer's voice is nothing special and I really like the tune". We rehearsed the songs this morning and I think I passed the audition (According to their standards, of course).

Actually, there was a bigger reason for me to decide to take that step: If the original performer can sing the song like this, then I'm going to sound like an angel .

(That's what I'm going to sing. Of course I know they aren't the original performers, but theirs is the most popular version)

I know that singing in tune (No problem with that) with clear and articulated vocals (Know the lyrics perfectly well) and good feel (I enjoy the song so much) I can compensate for my lack of a good voice (). Of course I'm going to play bass, too!

I remember the first time I'd ever sang infront of anyone. A couple solo songs infront of most of my school. But it was just some some blues-esque songs I wrote, so I didnt need a beautiful voice. I was really nervouse at first, but I started having way to much to fun to even think about being nervous about two verses in.

I remember the first time I sang in public while playing bass. Back in 1981, with my high school jazz band, We had to do a lunch for the chamber of commerce, and they wouldn't know what to make out of the actual jazz we were working on in class. So we were given charts to balnd pop tunes and several of us were picked to sing middle of the road ballads. To my surprise, I was picked to sing as well. It was on the Billy Joel song, 'Just The Way You Are'.

I didn't really like song too much beforehand. But now when I hear it I'm reminded of that first time in front of people being more successful than I expected and I can't help but smile. So when I hear it in the supermarket or an elevator or something, I chuckle. And people around me think I'm demented.

Attitude and ability to sing in pitch > Voice quality

However, if you want to improve your voice quality, expand your range and know your limits, I'd recommend to check out Invalid Link Removed. Every singer should be familiar with that. Unlike many other instruments, bad technique is always dangerous and hence, the only way to avoid vocal damage is good technique. Too bad I didn't know that for my first 10 years as a singer... Well, better late than never....

The experience was cool. I tried to to my best and I think I got a decent result within my possibilities. Sadly, the place wasn't as packed as usual for a Saturday night because there were many other "big" events in the town. Not so much fun under those conditions, but I had a good time anyway.

There's an evidence of the crime: Here is an excerpt of an ultra crappy video (completely dark, distorted and barely understandable audio) captured with my camera. At least I have a document of my first experience as a lead vocalist.
