My otherwise great romanian carved bass had a bad howling wolf between G# and A on the A and D string. It has another spot around the F# on the G string and on the D string in thumb position. But that one is not howling, just a loud resonance.
The weight thingy on the A string or D string afterlength did move it by a quartertone or so, but otherwise did not change much. I did play around with the after length some. The immediate result was usually that the wolf was gone, then a day later everything settled back to the same old.
Anyway, I think I saw somewhere a wolf suppression product that was fixed to two afterlegth strings with a weight in between. I decided to try my own version with a rubber band and a hex bolt.
Wolf is completely gone. The A is still louder, and there is a hesitation when I play the A harmonic on the A string, but the howling is completely gone. I don't think the overall resonance suffered. The F# issue is still there. I tried a couple of other combinations, for example I removed the weight. Which made the howl come back.
Maybe this helps someone.
