Wood knobs, normal and stacked

Hey,

Does anyone know where to get the metal collar inserts? I tried a google but didnt turn anything up

EDIT: Just tried Google again, still nothing - well, over four thousand results and none of them "metal collar insert for audio knob"

I don't think that you will find those heavy inserts as an over-the-counter part. The closest thing i can think of is the adapter collars to let you use set-screw knobs on split shafts. I use them and they were available through Allparts or StewMac, and you can probably source them in the UK. Otherwise you are dealing with having them machined to your specs.

Obviously, report back if you find them!

Try a threaded insert (something like this: http://www.rockler.com/product.cfm?page=362). They come in a variety of metals and sizes. Drill the center to the size you need after you install it in your wood knob. Then drill the assembled knob from the side and tap for a set screw. This would be difficult without a drill press, a vise and/or task-specific jig.

Just a thought, haven't tried it.

One cheap alternative would be those drill-bit depth-stop collars they sell for an € or a two per set.

A not so cheap example of what I mean:

In this application the cheapo with a set screw will do nicely.

Ok, must of been having a bad day yesterday (brain worn out by too much timber shopping), as the answer is just so simple:

Find some brass tube with inside diameter of 6.35mm, it doesnt really matter what the outside diameter is provided youve got a drill bit to match.

Drill and glue into the wooden knob using epoxy.

When its dry, drill into the side and tap for the set screw.

I made my own knobs using a metal lathe and 3/8" diameter brass rod stock - a good hardware store may have 3/8 brass bolts you could use. A metal working shop can do this project very easily for you. if you DIY first turn the knob diameter, while on the lathe drill a hole for the rod, epoxy the rod stock in. jig up a drill press to drill and tap the set screw. return the knob to the lathe, turn the rod stock down and recess 1/16 and drill the proper diameter for a pot shaft - you're done
