Hi guys, At this moment a one-off bass is being modified for me. I wanted some special knobs on it, so I said: make me some wood knobs, in the same wood as the bass itself (maple, ebony veneer, merbau top). They said it isn't possible, because the knobs have to have a set screw ánd there's a stacked knob involved. I thought: ok, no custom wood knobs. No problem, I'll order some nice, simple, ebony knobs. What do I see: nowhere to be found! Ok, they exist as push-ons, but there seem to be no wood knobs with set screws anywhere on this planet Is there a shop you know where I could buy ebony (or very dark rosewood or walnut) knobs with a set screw and one stacked? Or is wood like that (or wood in general) too vulnerable for this kind of building? Oh, and if possible in Europe EDIT: It's about this bass: Thanks a lot!
Knobs with set screws can be found.....but finding the particular wood you're looking for, might be somewhat challenging, you might want to conside getting a light set and staining them. http://cgi.ebay.ca/BOXWOOD-ELECTRIC...categoryZ47067QQcmdZViewItem#ebayphotohosting Keep your eyes on the bay...... Stacked ones? may be difficult, but I don't think impossible.
PJ, I think you just made my day. I hope they fit (I don't know exactly how big the pots are). But if they fit and you're ever in the Netherlands, let me know, I owe you a beer!
Here's my Conklin with custom knobs. Notice one is stacked. They are Pau Ferro, Ebony, and Cherry. They were made exactly to my spec. Be forewarned, they weren't cheap. www.thgknobs.com
I agree with Wilser, David King is an awesome guy, He helped me out with some bridge ideas not too long ago. He builds some awesome headless basses too.
I'd think the thing to do was get a set of ordinary metal ones, turn them down and add a wooden shell-this way the setscrews work as before, placing no strain on the wood.EDIT: Nevermind. Dave King has it down.
+1 for THG. I live in the UK, but had no problems, my e-mails were answered in a timely fashion and the product looks great. Here are the lacewood/dyed burl maple set on my lacewood Jackson 'Kip Winger'.
I've got a few bourbon bottle caps I plan on using as knobs on something. At least that's what I keep saying, then I can keep saying "I need more knobs..."
I didn't realize how badly i needed custom wooden knobs until I saw this thread Thanks for the links guys!
Major +1 to that. Based on this thread, I called David (well, I emailed him). Great prices, and extremely fast service (unlike some other custom knob makers with whom I've tried to work). And the results are BEAUTIFUL. They'll arrive soon (getting shipped today) and then I'll get some photos on my Zon. JK
I have a set of THG's on my Zon Sonus, and they are very nice. I like the dking knobs with the metal collar! I had a set of THGs that split because the set screw is threaded into the wood. Still great work from THG, but beware getting to aggressive with the set screw.
Hey, Does anyone know where to get the metal collar inserts? I tried a google but didnt turn anything up Cheers! EDIT: Just tried Google again, still nothing - well, over four thousand results and none of them "metal collar insert for audio knob"
They only come in rosewood and ebony, and no stacking, but I thought you folks might like to see these. Oh yeah, the price.... Almost free! http://www.grizzly.com/products/Guitar-Knob-Rosewood-w-Eye-Pair/T1105 http://www.grizzly.com/products/Guitar-Knob-Ebony-w-Eye-Pair/T1104 Even if you just got them to recover with your wood plug of choice, they would be a good option.
