I have a little project in mind that I would like some opinions and thoughts on. My old German carved bass has a replaced end pin (ebony) with a 16mm hollow, metal shaft. It's great and I threaded it (long story) to accept the threaded M10 crutch tip or a New Harmony threaded ball tip. I am considering replacing the shaft with an oak shaft. I bought one here and can buy more that are tapered to be used as a "Laborie" style end pin. It tapers from 5/8" (16mm) to 1".
My intention is to keep the 1" portion at the proper length for both seated and standing laying. The option is the shaft portion that slides into the end pin. I can either turn the end pin on a lathe and whittle down that portion to 16mm from the top of it down to the measured length for playing OR cut it to length, find a 16mm diameter metal shaft, drill a hole and tap the wood top end, and thread the metal shaft to screw into the wood. My ebony end pin "receiver" had a curved, round disk that pushes into the shaft versus the thumb screw digging directly into it. In both instances, the 1"diameter portion of the shaft will be up against the bottom of the ebony end pin housing.
