Wooten's new toy

A HUGE +1 on that - especially the DMB solo - that was the first thing that sprang to mind when i heard him start that solo. the DMB clip really does show a much better "version" of Vic - passion, feeling and musicality.

+1 on the rest of your post as well!

But I rather see him in the Flecktones context versus him Solo

I would also take say "overjoyed" or "naima" over "me and my bass guitar" and "classical thump"

Just groove vic, no need for 1000 random notes

i think he's past the point where his tech is great to hear, he gets so fast you dont really know what hes playing and just you're just hearing bing-bing-bang-bing-bob-bob-bob-bob-slang! or playing some major chords like real fast. *then some peoples complain about heavy metal :S dont see the difference*

I think he's a realy realy realy good player dont get me wrong, but he should play at half capacity (on speed) and just groove more instead of real fast note streaking. just dont like it.

On topic, finally.

Its a cool bass :) i wonder about the quility of it? you need to drill holes in the neck and such... doesnt it lose "something" when that's done?

I like Victor best when he is laying down a nice simple groove. He doesn't have to do all the super fast double thumb stuff to be great. And forgive me but I do not like the bass tossing. Toss your salad not your bass. :D

Wow..

So this thread reminds me of the kid at guitar center playing page #3 of the "how to slap bass" book...or virtually anyone playing that one riff they've practiced a billion times. We've all done it-picked up one "wow" phrase or say that we'll play if someone requests it on the spot. My guess-the producers, a strong financial backer, or the public asks for it, so he plays it. Its fun and entertaining to watch and makes sure its a good show-unfortunately thats what 90% or more of the ticket buyers are there to see.

Gimmicks are cool, precussive bass is an awesome style, but I haveta agree with the group saying that there needs to be a musical path somewhere in the mix. (i.e.-I trust it wasn't an hour long performance of "funky socks"...) My physical/technical bass playing ability will NEVER catch my Music Theory background and experience. Its frustrating at times but has scored me a gig more often than not because I can fall into a chord progression/song structure quicker than most, then build a simple groove that gets the job done. most of my bass solo/improvisation work falls back on "licks" i've memorized and borrowed rather than spontaneous composition like I do when I'm playing sax-I'm just not in a comfort zone there yet.

Is the video impressive-Sure.
Is Wooten the best living electric bass player- Most Likely.
Is Wooten a sellout? If I could, I would :-)

Lets not hurt anyones feelings here...good post-love the basses, and someone should Slap ol' Vic for twirling that thing.

I've seen vic several times live and i must say that every time i've seen him i've walked out of that venue in utter disbelief of what i just saw. it's not the fast playing or the 1,000's of notes he was playing that awed me. it was the fact that he was creative enough just to come up with those fills and solos and the had ability to play them.

you see, some players play jazz, others rock, and even others blues, classical, funk, etc. victor plays it all and nails it every time. i know some of his funky stuff may sound a bit rushed and unclear, but that's funk. that's victor. if he wanted to play clean and articulate every time i'm sure he could. that's the way he wanted to play it that night.

IMHO, vic is probably the most versatile and technically advanced player out there right now. i mean, just look at the rest of his family. if you grew up in a family that talented and couldn't play an instrument, then you were the ******** little brother.

I agree. I also think it's about time he learned to do the swing around the neck properly if he's going to keep performing it so much. Or better yet retire it ;)

Yes and the music he made in the video sucked IMHO. I don't care how talented he is, I don't care if he is the bast bass player to walk the planet, the music sucked. Lavish all the praise on him that you want, but there are those of us that actually want to hear music not flashy talent, not a circus act - music.

uh yeah so about those leds...

Ive seen all kinds of led guitars that can be switched on and off, but how did he get them to do that with his playing?
somehow they are connected to the pups...that is so crazy(and i think more or less the point of the video link...)
