Work Diciplinary due to Facebook post

What kind of childish job is this, discipline at work for adults. I would say if you have a problem with what I do on my own time give me my check I'm out of here. The way I look at it I get paid to make my boss a lot of money if he starts playing games I'm through.

It's ok to say you had a tough day at work, but when you start saying stuff like that, it's over the line.

My brother is virtually unemployable due to the crap he's constantly spewing on FB. I have a feeling HR snoops are sending his profile to their friends because y'all wouldn't believe how dumb the guy is with his posts.

I heard of an almost similar story. This dude, who worked for starbucks, wore his starbucks apron and wrote a song about starbucks' customers. He essentially was saying they were annoying and all that stuff, really funny though! Very, very accurate as well!

He posted it on youtube, had like hundreds of thousands of hits (maybe a mill - I do not know really) and he was later fired for it. Apparently, sh*t talking will get you fired even though you are out of the work place.. I think it is balls, but hey... that is the man for ya!

First, that was from this area around Fresno. I watched the video and thought it was funnier than hell! He was playing guitar and singing about some of the crappy customer types he had to deal with everyday as a barista working at Starbucks. The guy has a way with
phrasing... He's got talent.

That said, my drummer and his wife also work at Starbucks. They lived the song also, but pointed out a half dozen or so direct employee code violations right off the bat.

And here's the kicker. Once the story went viral, the guy was interview on numerous local radio shows here in town. Not only was he not pissed at Starbucks for firing him, he understood why, admits yes he deserved to be fired, and had nothing but kind words to say about the company, saying he loved working there and would go back in a heartbeat if asked!

But he may not have to. On one of the last interviews I heard him on, a guy who owns a business in town offered to pay him to write a jingle / promo song for his company. I think the guy may have stumbled into a new career.

Side Note - I was EXTREMELY impressed by the attitude this kid had through all this. As much as we see of the dregs that are out there, there are some great young adults who will rise to the top. Despite everything we see to the contrary, I'm our future is in very good hands.

hahah it is one thing to laugh at the song, but it is truly gold when you know people who actually work for starbucks and can relate whole heartedly to the situation. My friends have worked there for many years, and I have heard such incredible stories from them that I immediately recognized everything they spoke about within his song.

There are running jokes about getting a latte without milk, and iced coffee, hold the ice! It is classic how silly people are when it comes to getting their coffee!

And I agree, the composer of that song was very commendable in how he handled the situation. He even wrote an apology song in his defense that it was just a joke. Even better is the opportunity you say he got out of it. Sometimes saying something such things can land you a great job!

Another good idea is to think to yourself before you post "would I say this out loud around the people this concerns?" and let your answer guide you.

Apparently a girl I have added who I've gone to school with since grade three is my bosses daughter... Looks like I can't bash him on Facebook!

I was actually joking about it with him, and he found it funny. Seriously, though. I don't really like him. I've never been one to call people out on Facebook, either. Too public.

I think there is a major difference between knowing a person's name on talkbass verse people knowing who you personally on facebook. Let's be serious here.

to the OP, I think if no names are mentioned, there is no need for your manager to be the only manager in your life, that said, it won't save you from getting fired, but it might hold if you sue afterwards.
But the best course of action would be to apologize, and hope for the best.

I never post ANYTHING on Facebook unless I am OK with everyone in the world seeing it, forever. This stuff is persistent, and even if you "delete" your account, they hold on to the data, so you are still not safe from the things your younger, stupider self said.

So, you say you hate someone on a network on which you have a hundred friends, mention his/her position, say it's in your company, mention something that happened the very day of your post, then wonder why they linked it all together?

I'm pretty sure they hired private detectives to figure it out, because you totally protected everyone in that story.

Agreed. It would be a different story if you had said that directly to one of your co-workers, but you posted it at home on your time.

Nope. Most (if not all) publicly traded companies make you sign an ethics agreement when you're hired. It includes language related to defamation of the company and all employees who work there, regardless of how & when it was done. They can fire you on the spot. If you don't like it, you don't have to work there.

BTW all my hiring managers at work have content filter bypasses for facebook just to check for crap like this before interviews.

Anonymity Online is dead not matter which way you try to look at it. Think before you post.
Now if the post is timestamped while you're suppose to be at work, great you deserve it for stealing company time.
