Work, money, and happiness

I’ve never had a job that I’ve loved, but I’ve never had one that I didn’t like either. At least not for long. Most of the jobs I’ve had have pleasantly occupied my time and kept me comfortably supplied with money. I have more than enough now.

I’ve never been able to hold onto a passion for more than six months either, so I don’t know what it’s like to do that one thing I’m passionate about for a living. I have or have had dozens of hobbies, but I’m like the cartoon dog who becomes distracted by a squirrel. Now that I think of it, I guess the dog was passionate about squirrels.

My mother took by brother on a trip with her when he was ten years old. They flew from Columbus to New York on a TWA Lockheed Constellation (this was in the day when to fly on an airliner was a big deal.) The captain gave him a set of wings and a tour of the cockpit. My brother fell in love with flying and from that day forward he knew what he wanted to do with his life. He retired last year from a working life as a corporate pilot.

I have always envied him, knowing at such an early age what he wanted to do with his life, but I’m pretty sure he’s no happier than I am, having never known what I wanted to do with mine.

Anyway, I’ve always been happiest helping others. Do that and you won’t go wrong.
