Worship Bass Pedalboards

Not pedals or a board, but yesterday I used my new Xvive U2 wireless system for the first time live. Worked great. These things have generally received good-to-great reviews on guitar and mixed reviews on bass (especially active basses), but no issues with my StingRay 5.

I heard no difference in tone, clipping, etc. vs. a cable, nor did I hear the high-pitched whine that some people report. But YMMV obviously.

So include thinking of putting together a small pedalboard on my pedal train nano for P&W. only catch, I would like them to be appropriate pedals for both electric bass and electric guitar. I play a MM Bongo double humbucker for bass and a strat style electric guitar. I was thinking of a compressor, overdrive, delay and one more. Thoughts on brands of pedals, or a fourth pedal to include? Thanks

For overdrive look at one of Source Audio's Aftershock, Kingmaker, or LA Lady. You could load different settings for guitar and bass as each can load the other's sounds and knobs are assignable. For compressor maybe something with a blend that will give you a little more flexibility switching between instruments. Most bass compressors are more about headroom than functionality, or something like the Diamond Bass Comp that has a switchable tilt. Delay isn't as common a bass effect, but technically any digital delay will work fine with both.

Compressor choice is something that is very personal. Something I am struggling with right now myself. Look at Compressor Reviews for some great reviews. If you just want a list of some good choices, go to My top picks. Personally I'm debating between the MXR, Keeley and Seymour Duncan. The MXR Bass Compressor and the MXR Studio Compressor only differ in their chassis. Same circuitry internally. The Keeley Bassist is essentially the same as their Guitar compressor, but has better support for limiting, per ovnilab.

Delays and Reverbs aren't too often used for bass unless you're taking solos. I've thought about a delay for a thickening effect/quick slapback, but I'm not sure that it will not just muddy the sound of my bass.

OD/Distortion is also very personal as there are so many flavors. The Darkglass stuff is really popular right now for bass. Guitar ODs can rob a bass signal of its lowend, but sometimes you can find one that works for your particular tastes. A friend is using an MXR Wylde Overdrive on his bass pedalboard and seems to like it well enough.

A touch of chorus can sometimes be a nice addition, used judiciously. I'm looking at the MXR bass chorus with it's X-over for my own use. In my experience, limited though it be, guitar chorus pedals wash out the low end frequencies when used with a bass. The EHX choruses seem to not do that as much, but that is a subjective matter.

Just putting this out there to maximize exposure and get advice - the more I use octave pedals for synth tones, the more I find these moments when I really want to hold out these long, sustained notes. Anyone have any advice?

Does anyone here use bass footpedals, or a mono bass keyboard synth? Possibly looking for recommendations on this (I don't know if we have an extra channel to accommodate this anyway, plus its just more crap to buy, but SURE SEEMS COOL!!!)

I have the EHX Freeze with Kennatone mods. I don't have it on the pedalboard yet, because I'm still trying to play around with it and some others at home before loading it on.

I have the Darkglass VMTD and the Super Symmetry - I use the VMTD to pull in a tiny bit of distortion/tube warmth. The Super Symmetry is the best compressor I have tried. I had a Keeley and tried the Cali (and LOTS more) but liked the Darkglass better than anything else I tried.

When I need to add in more distortion I use a Red Witch Factotum - sounds GREAT and does not rob the low end.

The main effects I use are:
Tuner > EQ > compressor > (optional looper).

Had about five different versions of it over the years:

TU-2 > M80 > M87 > RC1
G3 - my first experiment with an "all-in-one" pedal, worked pretty good, made me a zoom fan.
G3 > M87 - I missed the lights on the M87 to dial in compression.
MS-50G - this was an experiment to see if a tiny pedal could do it all, worked well enough.
MS-6B - since I liked the MS-50G, just got this one, going to play out on it soon.

Seems like the Zoom effects can be had in a dozen different form factors,
once you learn what one can do you learn them all.

Doing it all with one small pedal tickles my fancy for some reason, Zoom has very flexible EQ too.
The last two versions fit in my bass case, no need to carry a pedal board.

The problem with compressors is while I'd have one both on my guitar and bass boards due to the way i'd use them i'd have completely different ones set in completely different ways on each board. Just illustrating the point using 2 pedals from the same brand, On bass I really want a multiband comp to run later in the chain to even out the really loud parts when i'm slapping etc, so I'd use something like the MXR Bass/Studio comp (basically the same) or the Boss CP-1X, whereas on guitar I want something at the start of the chain to squash down my cleans alot so I'd use something like the MXR DynaComp or the Boss CS-3.

But this is coming from someone who will eventually run 2 compressors on there bass board.

Have a look at the plus pedal, I was also considering the digitech freqout but for slightly different things.

Recently built a Nano board, for occasions when I don't want to bring all the OD on my Classic Jr. I call it my "pretty music" board...particularly nice with my Rob Allen Deep 5 (e~c) and 6 string bass! Cioks DC5 underneath...

Btw, EBS cables are THE best for tight spaces...
