Worship Bass Pedalboards

Here's the pedal board I use with our worship team. Signal chain is: MXR Bass Compressor -> Boss TU3 Tuner -> TC Electronic Corona Chorus -> Mesa Subway DI. I send a direct signal to the front of the house (post EQ) and a reference signal to the effects return of the GK. Generally, I use a Fender 5 string Jazz Bass with Duncan quarter pounders and hipshot high mass bridge type A. The board is homemade.

Well, I play in a Casting Crowns tribute band named Lifesong. I use a Mesa Subway D800 and an old Mesa 4x10 Diesel cab and it sounds incredible. The Subway is very easy to operate and you can find myriad different tone shapes very easily. At church we're about to go with in ears so I'll just be sending a signal to the board. I picked up the Subway DI because I love mesa gear. If I'm going to send a direct signal, that's about all I'm willing to trust! Pull the trigger on one or a D800 (or D800+) you won't be sorry!

OK as promised, the zoom signal path is as follows running from beginning of chain to the end:

160 Comp: Thrsh -10 Ratio 4.6 Gain 10 Knee set to Hard Level to unity (33 for me). Obviously there's a bit of personal choice you can put into your comp settings. That goes into...

ZNR: Noise reducer, we have a lot of power on stage and it makes a little buzz a lottle buzz. I use this, but I will swap this "pedal" out for other effects as needed. Next....

B-MAN: Bass 1 Mid 2 Trebl 1 Mid_F 630Hz Gain 31 Level 49 (Unity) Deep On Cab AG 8x10 Mix 0 (With the mix at 0 you can leave the cab blank. Occasionally I'll swap it with the cab on the next patch)...

SVT: Bass 3 Mid -8 Trebl 5 Mid_F 40 Hz Gain 40 Level 44 (Unity) Ultra Low Cab BM 4x12 Mix 76

Thats it in the Zoom, it's always on and the biggest factor (pedal-wise) to my tone. I use the Tone Hammer as DI and boost some high mids and treble (depending on how new the strings are).

Here are 3 clips of it in use. Obviously bass choice, pick vs finger and everything else plays a big difference but this shows how versatile it can be. No changes to the settings in any of these, just technique and adding the B3K in a couple areas. The first one is the most pure of the 3

I used to live in Boulder/Longmont/Superior and I believe I visited that church circa 2001, but not in its current building/iteration.

Was this actually during a worship service or some sort of concert thing?

These are all parts of the service. We will typically try to incorporate one modern secular song for a multitude of reasons. Clearly there are limitations to that... NWA wouldn't be possible... you get the gist. The special song is in addition to a 3-4 song worship set, and will directly tie into the message in some way. I'll just say that's interesting. I'm not intending to criticize or debate, it's just probably something we wouldn't do for a variety of reasons, and I'm a guy who once introduced a Christmas worship set by referencing the dinner table scene from "Talladega Nights."

No offense taken. It's definitely a unique approach that we take. It's the kind of thing I try not to explain on the internet because we know how far into the weeds that can go. That being said I always invite people to come and check it out for themselves (in person or online) or I'll even sit down for coffee or a beer and talk through it face to face.

I have done a few things more secular in nature at church, but in the abstract, these seem to be further than I would go. Having said that, context is key and as you mentioned they lined up with the message. More importantly, your group has an amazing sound and I really like your tone. If I ever get out that way, I will be by for a service to be sure.

Not sure what power brick you're using, but I would think that it might make more sense to get a Classic Jr and combine everything. The PT boards aren't over the top expensive...selling two Nano's and buying one CJ, helps.

I know you like to go with a simple carry-in at church, but it's not a huge difference. Certainly would seem easier to bring a Classic Jr (vs two Nano's) and not spend extra time wiring everything together at each secular gig?

I use a one spot. Yeah, a Classic Jr. with bag is $120 on Amazon. The Nano's are $70 so if I could sell them for $40 each I'd be close to the Jr. I hate hauling but it isn't much bigger and I would get sick of patching them.

I've done it both ways, including now, a Metro 20 and Classic Jr. Tomorrow I have a Pedal Pad AXS III coming that I'm going to move everything on to. More and more, I find going back and forth is a pain, so I'm just going to go in style and have everything there, ready and in a protective hard shell case. I'll post pics soon. Both my Metro 20 & Classic Jr will be in the classifieds soon as well.

Do you have a bag for your Classic Jr? Maybe I could just take that off your hands.
Much as I want a P bass, I'm going to hold off. I get a passable P bass sound from my Roscoe when I want it and all my bands really use the B string so maybe I'll try to be a one bass guy (and my G&L for jazz/pit gigs) for a while. Spend a little more on a couple effects and then hopefully start putting my band income to debt reduction and being a little more fiscally free in 2 years.
