i nominate the MXR El Grande Bass Fuzz. What went wrong there?
Is the El Grande really a muff clone? I thought it was closer to a fuzz face. Not seen the circuit though so can't really say for sure!
You know it's not really fair because I haven't actually tried it but I'm going to go out on a limb and nominate the Behringer VD-1.
may i just ask why the el grande receives so much bashing round here?![]()

it's just another super-scooped high gain fuzz. totally unidistinguished and not at all versatile. you could do worse for more money, but you could also do way better for less.
It gets much better if you tweak the internal bass control. Certainly not even close to being the worst ever. I'll take it over the LBM any day. I'm still evaluating it against my Bass Muff. The MXR actually has the upper hand right now!
+1!
i too feel that the el grade isnt terrible at all. it just takes exploration and tweaking. there are FAR WORSE out there.
regardless, im pretty sure its based off of the fuzz face. i could be wrong though![]()
as far as attempts made to copy/match the circuit, the fulltone 70 fuzz was only okay to me, something was missing from the sound. theres prob worse out there but its the weakest that ive encountered.
however the world of digital modeling has yet to capture the essence of the fuzz.
just my two cents. some may use the fulltone and love it. it doesnt suit my tastes though.
id like to add that im not an MXR fanboy, and i could obviously understand why it falls short of expecations. i expected to get a cool effect to use every now and then, not a highly priced big muff, so i was satisfied![]()
