worst muff clone ever nominations thread

How is any type of big muff actually made by EHX even considered a clone?
I would suppose the ones being produced today are trying to be clones of the original muff circuit.
Since they are being made by the same company i suppose it would be more like the evolution of the original, but clone sounds better to me.

it's hair-splitting, since they've made so many variations. Technically not clones, but if one is someone's least favorite version of the circuit, I'll count it for these purposes

D), the EHX big muff pedals that I tried and did not like were the NYC Big Muff (the one in the huge box), and the Little Big Muff. The low end seemed to disappear when you got into the slay children zone.

well i got it used for $70 in like new condition so its pretty even id say
but i think we need clarification of sorts on this. to me, it makes sense for the el grande to be based on the fuzz face, seeing as dunlop is the producer of said pedals, and that both designs were prevalent in the 70's. not to say that MXR doesnt want in on the big muff legacy, but its unsure.
but as far as EHX products are concerned, none seem to live up to the precedent of the vintage pedals that set the standard. my first pedal ever was a recent big muff russia, and it killed, but theres much room for improvement as i see it.
except nobody would describe the fuzz face design as a 70s fuzz. it's a classic 60s fuzz. when they say "70s fuzz" they want you to understand "big muff" - THE classic 70s fuzz. which is not to say you have to love the muff.
fair enough. I wanted to like the el grande. I LOVE compact pedals and if it could compete with the BBM in tone and flexibility, I would have kept it, because small is always a plus.

crabapple - nyc reissue (who really wants to eat/use it?)
granny smith - green russian (for a minute everyone wanted to eat it/use it)
chinese apple - bass big muff (sweet, sour, blendable)
mcintosh - black russian (EHX wanted to say it was a reissue of the green, but what did they know?)
red delicious - ggg-tuned (makes for great applesauce or blended w/ your clean; tart, yet satisfying)
fuji - triangle (big a Hell, mmmmmm)
jonathan - ram's head (great for baking in all senses of the word)
I'm dead tired, the Mrs. is asleep, the baby woke up...ugh.

Didn't care for the LBM, the Muff OD (not a true muff, I know), or the Double Muff (also not really a true muff) as far as official EHX releases go.
Personally I don't mind the NYC reissue, but that's because I don't try to judge it as a bass pedal. It was originally designed to be a guitar effect, and as such it obviously shouldn't have a deep low end since it isn't intended for metal. One of these days I'll have to change out the caps to make mine more bass friendly, but for now I'm happy with the rehouse that I did a while back.

given the benefit of the doubt that it would probably sound good doing SOME kinds of fuzz, but i'd imagine that there are very, very few applications for it.

interesting discrepancy, since the LBM is not a bass-oriented pedal either
True, but I was looking for a smaller version of the NYC, or the Sovtek even. The gain structure, tone stack, and frequency of the input/output caps must be different on it. I wasn't thrilled with it which is why I opted to rehouse my NYC instead. I wouldn't call it a discrepancy just because you want to poke holes...

but on the logic side, you chose to excuse the one you liked for "not being a bass pedal", while the one you didn't like received no similar pass
I never said that I liked it for not being a bass pedal. Just a question as to why others seem to bash the NYC so much when they should full well expect it to eat some lows by virtue that it's a guitar pedal. Anyhow, this thread derailment has gone on long enough... Let's get back to the thread at hand.
