Double Bass Worth it to change bridges?

I'm interested in buying this Wilfer Bass I found in Gage's shop. It's great, it sounds beautiful, it fits me just right, easy to play, and best off only 4,500$. The problem is I think the bridge stinks. I might be wrong and just not used to this different kind of bridge, but the A D and G are very close in height and it's hard to stay on one string when playing the D because if I move very slightly I hit the A or the G. I havn't bought it yet but I was wondering if changing the bridge would be too much of a hassle. Also would it change the tone significantly?

There's nothing sacred about a bridge. It either works or doesn't. Some can be altered to work better or if needs changing, no biggie. Chances are if it's set up in such a faulty way, it's probably not that great anyway. On the other hand, if it's a decent bridge and not warped and if there's enough meat on the top, it can be recurved to match the fingerboard and allow enough space to bow properly. If you decide to buy the bass, have David or one of his guys to fix or replace the bridge. I decided early on in my playing, to learn some of these techniques, by watching luthiers, and trial and error. It's saved me some money, allowed me more of an idea how I want my bass to feel and sound like, and some degree of assurance while on a gig away from repair people that I can save the day if something goes awry.
Something to consider if you feel the same.

As long as there is enough "meat" left in the heart. Otherwise you will need to have a new bridge fitted...

I will bet that Mr. Gage will throw in a new bridge shape or fitting if the set-up doesn't suit you. Part of satisfying a new customer.
