Ahem! :) The edges of the f-holes on some fine basses with some very nice grain are blackened.

Nice of you to take the time to give the OP all of that detail.

Take a knowledgable-someone w you or find a shop nearby for appraisal if the widow will allow it. I'd approach it like buying a used car or adopting a dog--not a weightless matter unless you're loaded & don't give a damn about animals. And converting from ebg to db is no picnic either. not hell it's awesome just not a picnic.

Yes, that's the one Troy. :) It turns out that you were right. The paint on the f-holes was masking the fact that the plys had been glued together with Cheese-Whiz.

My son and I went and we ended up picking it up. It was standing up tied to a support pole in his basement with shoestrings! Definitely all wood. It stands about 4 or 5 inches taller then me and I'm 6'3. Body wood on the back looks to be two piece and has a nice flame to it. Definitely some wear and tear on her, but not bad considering she looks pretty old. Has a black pinstripe around the front and a working pickup that I plugged into my GK and it sounded sweet.

Cat ended up taking the $150 I offered and seemed happy to be rid of it being in the finished area of his basement. Went over every inch and still cannot see any name/brand. Going to bring it to a friend in a bluegrass band in a few weeks to set it up and give it the once over. I think I did pretty good.

Amazing. In years of seeing people go through what you did, I can't remember as good of a steal. Link Removed he has some standard measurements at various points that will lead you to understanding where it sits on the size continum. The most important one by far in my mind in mensure. Get a tape measure and measure nut to bridge where the strings cross each.

Nothing inside the F-Holes?

Someone will have some thoughts on it based on the neck, hardware and general shape. I'm not great at bass-id.

Great buy, man. Really great buy.

Oh, and yeah, it was worth the drive.

Is that with the end pin still being extended as in the photo(s)? :eyebrow: If so, retract it all the way in & then take another look :hmm:

Excellent Suggestion!

Regardless of the outcome following a visit to the luthier, what with your bottom line investment of only $150, you shouldn't wind up in too awful bad of shape . . . & . . . you just might even discover that you've hit a Dinger ;)

Thanks guys. Bridge to nut measured just a hair shorter then 44". I'm thinking 4/4 based on that site?

Was able to tune her up pretty easily. It's a lot more of a stretch then my left hand is used to...but have been trying like hell and playing non stop the last day and a half. So much fun.
