Would a 212 be enough?

Okay, here's my dilema. I love my eden 410 XLT to death. But... the 98 pounds is starting to loose its cool. It's akward to load, and when we play gigs up stairs, it just flat out sucks, even with the help of band mates.

So, I've thought about the idea of "scaling back persay." When I had originally bought this cab i really didn't know what I was doing I went to the store, and I knew eden's were supposed to be good, and it sounded good, and it was used, so I got it (sounded more full than other other cabs there, ampegs, fenders, and SWR's).

Anyway, so here comes my thoughts. My band (Eclyptic, in my sig if you care), plays a good amount of shows. We'll play shows at bars, clubs, concert venues, festivals, anywhere that'll have us honestly (and that pays). But most of these shows require me to bring my bass rig. So, would a 212 be enough? I'm very used to haveing a 410 on stage with me, but I think I could get over that. I use a GK 800RB for now. But the problem is the only way I could get a new cab would be trading my old one in. So, once again, will a 212 amp be big enough, and loud enough (I know it depends on efficency, and ohms and all that fun stuff) to support a full band (2 guitars and drums?).

I'm currently leanings towards schorder or berg. cabs right now, incase that helps.

I run an Aguilar SS rig with a 212. I sometimes add an Ampeg 115 if the club doesn't run the bass through the PA.

With that said, the 212 will do fine for stage sound, and will do fine in small clubs as the only thing propelling your sound. I've been using it for a good year now and it's worked well for me, and we play the same type of circuit.

I do a lot of shows and a variety of venues (just not this month) :crying: also and in most cases, a 212 doesn't always cut it for me pending on the size of the venue and P.A. support. 2-12's is great for stage and medium size venues without P.A. support but considering our 2 guitarists get loud, so for outside and big stage venues I use a UL410 because I know it'll cut through the mix. I've even had sound techs ask me to turn down because the UL410 really throws the sound out there.
I know you're looking at Schroeder and Bergs, I've heard really great things about both of them but have not had the pleasure of playing through either of them.
But for you info, the Epi UL410 is 1000 watts @ 4 or 8 ohms and is 57 lbs.
The reason I'm mentioning 410's, is if you like the sound of 10's and weight is the issue, you might want to the weight options rather than 12's.

I've been getting lazy lately & just taking my Eden 212XLT to most gigs.... The 210XST is collecting dust at the mo

Mostly pubs & medium sized clubs and have a little PA support for bigger rooms...

Only running about 350w into it too ( It's an 8ohm cab with a WT550 ) But the Eden 212 is a pretty efficient cab (103db, but you get 106db with the 410XLT), my guitard is also pretty good volume wise.

A good 4ohm 212 could do the trick IMHO

Amen brutha!! I've owned a Schroeder and I REALLY didn't like the sound. Now I've got an Epifani UL410 and it is DA BOMB!....did we mention it's 57 lbs.? Or if you're into the 212 thing, the UL212....59 lbs.

i love my UL410, did you hear they are only 57 lbs?... :D

but seriously though, if you like the sound of 10s and want something lighter try the UL410, i used to own an Aguilar gs410 and that thing broke my back, and the UL410 just kills it in volume, tone weight and it really does cut through a heavy mix.

I switched to a 212 about 3 months ago and my 410 stays home alot more these days!! I have a GS410 which is very similar to the XLT in sound and weight. Nothing cuts like a 410 (OK an 810), but with a 212 you should be able to play most gigs. I've been doing that and haven't had a problem yet. On the other hand, if you can swing it, just get one of the lighter 410s like the Epifani, which is awesome and light!

You should check out a Genz Benz NeoX 212, preferrably with a Genz head. Huge sounding cabinet, I love mine and it has never failed to produce, including outdoors.

Have never owned a 410, but the thought of hauling around one is not appealing. The GB 212 is under 65 lbs and the vertical stacking of the drivers makes it a manageable width. Has top recessed handles and tilt-back casters for pushing it around. Rated at 600W and very efficient.

Up here in Syracuse NY I use an Aggie 2x12 with my AG-500 Head for most gigs . . more than enough and I am in a very loud and very funky Rn'B Band with 3 guitar players !!
When we play outside I use a World 1.2 with an Aggie DB-680 up front going to a Aggie 2x12 on one side and a Genz-Benz 2x12 on the other NEVER a Problem hearing or feeling that every thump !!

Just make sure that you do a side by side comparison (with your head and bass) to compare how the cab you are considering is going to sound compared to your Eden. Despite being heavy and hard to manouver, your cab is a sweet sounding little monster.

That being said, I am halfway to having a 2 x112 mini stack and so far, my new Ampeg SVT112HE is really impressing me. It handles 300 watts rms and is really a thumpin little cab. I am anxious to get a second one and am quite confidant that the pair will be all I need for just about any situation. I will be keeping my 810 as it is so damm fun to play through, but I am really amazed how much volume a single 12 cab can deliver. I can only imagine that if you like the sonic character of a 212, it would likely do just fine in place of you 410.

I recently got an Epifani UL212. I have only used it on one gig so far, but I really dig it. It is the lightest 59 lbs. I have ever lifted. I'm 47 years old and I can easily carry it with one hand!

I play in a loud classic rock/blues band (drums/bass/guitar and vox) in medium sized venues without PA support. I had been using a stack of two Aguilar GS112s, or a GS112 and a GS210, or most recently a Schroeder 410L. I sold the 410L to get the UL212. I happen to prefer the sound of 12" to that of tens. I powered the Epi with my Carvin B1500, so it was getting 1250W into its 4 ohms. The Epi has plenty of bottom (very well-defined and controlled-even down to the low B), and plenty of punch. It can get very loud and it never even came close to running out of steam. Again, this is only one gig, but I must say that I am very impressed so far. I think the Epi is definitely a keeper.

I've been using a Schroeder 1212R for about a year now. I've played in bands with two guitarists who both had Marshall 1/2 stacks and a heavy handed drummer. I have no problems cutting through a mix. The 1212 is loud or louder than many cabs twice it's size. It's also lighter than most and has a much smaller footprint!
