Would I be a jerk in this situation?

Oh gawd, talk to him privately. One band I was in had a band meeting and confronted the drummer about not practicing. This was not a good scene, especially since we had a groupie hanging around who tried to reassure him: "If you just practice, you can stay in the band." We all laughed about it later, but it was very uncool of us to do that in retrospect.

That said, different levels of commitment will ruin a band. You never want to be the most or least committed. I'd frame it like that: "seems like you've got other priorities, and aren't as committed as the rest of us." If he has any self-awareness, he'll hopefully get the message.

The words "band meeting" should be banned from conversation because they are only ever used when someone wants to do a group dump on another member. IME nothing good has ever come from a "band meeting." If there's a problem, it just needs to be dealt with. Not "met" about.

the only kind of band meeting worth a damn is 4 am breakfast at an all-night diner after load out

I am friends with the Joe, the room mate of a band member, Roger. In talking with Joe about the change to making music on stage to working on music at home, they respond by telling me that Roger never practices. I don't say anything to anyone about it because I am not trying to have Roger think I'm spying on him through his Joe. Joe isn't a musician. He doesn't know any other players in this town but me and Roger.

We are working on an EP individually with our various DAWs and getting mixed by our engineer. Roger sounds like he doesn't practice and creates a bunch of garbage takes. Roger almost quit, then walked it all back and produced almost passable with cut and paste tracks and it wasn't spoken of again.

A few months later, I'm talking to Tina, who plays the same instrument as this Roger about another band Tina and I play in together. Tina misses playing the type of music that I play with Roger. In talking about playing that type of music Tina says that she talked with Roger and Roger told that he never practices because he is focused on starting a business.

Aside from my ears, I have two unrelated sources telling me that Roger doesn't practice. Its not my call to fire Roger, but my question is, should I tell the band leader now that Roger doesn't practice?
Yes

If someone starts a question with "Do you think", or "Would I be", I assume that they already sort of know the answer, or think that yes, they would be. (whatever it is they're asking about)

There's plenty of good sensible feedback here already, just front up and ask the guy, in the same sort of way you'd like to be asked, if the boot was on the other foot and see what he says.

Heaven forbid it’s the drummer. No beat no band. :rollno:

Roger doesn't practice, of this we can be sure.

What's worse than that, Roger often sounds like he doesn't practice based on his sub-par tracks. Roger is spread too thin with his other obligations in life.

This is an easy conversation to have with your other band mates. Have Tina track some parts and put it up for a vote.

Firstly, I never practice. BUT, I will give you a damned good take or series of takes, or I will voluntarily walk out and offer up my position to someone who can dedicate the time.

So practicing? whatever - depends on the player's capabilities. Coming through when it counts to put down solid performances, be reliable, and help out with the project? Sounds like Roger is failing in those areas, and has apparently changed focus in his life.

That, however, is third hand information. NEVER trust 3rd hand info fully... but follow up with him and discuss it with him. Ask him about his focus on his business. If he's not able to, or interested in, dedicating to the project right now, that's just fine. You happen to know a woman who might just fit the bill.

Sounds like a win win to me. Not a jerk situation, as LONG as you talk to roger about it first hand. It will be a tough discussion, because you do have to point out that he hasn't really come through with much, and so forth.

I know this is real life music Dilemma but
Man,I'm loving and missing this type of soap opera vibes that I use to go through in the Band type situations.
its great (I mean it in sincere way)
my2 cents: do what you got to do to make the music right,
but don't say anything you'll regret later, might bite U in ass later....
Just do it with sincerity and love and see what happens...
