I just got a Sadowsky Metro from the classifieds at TB. To be honest I wasn't that impressed with the stock electronics. I really miss having a mid control as well as a cut option for all three freqs. I was thinking about putting an Aguilar OBP3 along with a set of Norstrand Big Singles in the Metro. The BS's would require a route job - not that big of deal. I had that combo installed in an Elrick I owned and it killed.

I think this would sound better - at least to me. What would this do to the value of the bass. Do you think it would degrade the value - stay the same - or increase it's value?

first off, it's your bass, and you can do what you want with it.

Adding a set of Nordie BS's on it won't detract at all from the value, IMO, provided you have it installed professionally...it may not add to the value, though...but making the bass sound the way that you want it adds value to YOU and that's what is important.

How did the bass perform on a gig? Still unimpressed?

It sounded OK.....however I would have to say that it was the preamp that left something to be desired. I could never get a good tone dialed in. If I came close to getting a good tone......there was too much bass a/o treble due to the boost only pre. This bass is a keeper for me so I think the Aguilar-Nordstrand deal is going to happen. I just need to scrape up some cash.

your problem could be why so many Sad owners go for a VTC to solve some of those issues

if you do go down the Nordie path, make sure you check out the Big Splits thoroughly before you settle...same rout as the Big Singles, with side-by-side noise-cancelling coils.

You shouldn't really hurt the value any, since it's not like Metro is a potential collectors item. Plus, as long as you keep the "bits" that it came with, you (or another owner) could always have them put back in. Go with what you like and with what sounds the best. Don't simply "accept" someone else's version of good tone if it doesn't match what you're trying to achieve for YOUR tone. ;)

I went to hear one of my students play an outdoor gig this weekend. He has a Metro Jazz with the stock pickup but he's replaced the pickups with Fender 62 reissues. Through a D.I. and a decent sound system it had a great sound. His on stage sound though his amp was good too. I really do think that the Sadowsky peamp. despite the boost only, has a very warm sound that I haven't heard from a lot of other preamps. A treble cut control added couldn't be all that hard to add.
