Would this tone be considered "growly"?

On a related note, you just reminded me…I've found D'Addario FlexSteels and Ernie Ball Cobalts to go well towards achieving some good growl. Interestingly though, the Cobalt flats have so much growl they sound quite a lot like rounds. Go fig! ;)

I agree. EB cobalt flats are rather growly! The bad thing is my 1st set had two strings break. EB was nice enough to send me out a new set so they are residing on my Casady right now. To be honest I'm not completely comfortable with them yet. It will be a couple months of no strings breaking before I'll feel ok playing this bass out. I hope they hold up and retain their sound then I will probably try a set on my Pbass. Maybe even on my Rick again!

Like I said earlier, this is why I want to make my "JazzRay". I want to start learning how to craft this kind of sound, but on a bass-platform that my hands and eyes like best.

Off-topic…as a drummer and bassist, I miss Tony and Bernie terribly. :crying: Not that I knew them or anything like that, but they always impressed me on so many levels.

To my ear, that Nirvana vid has a lot of 'deep zing' but almost no growl at all (trying to ignore the fret noise and downstream distortion).

Several others posting sounds that are clearly a result of downstream effects where playing hard anf adding some OD is equated to growl. I guess it's similar, but it's not the same as growl that is heard from a bass that is being played with no effects at all.

Well, music man doesn't offer a bass with a jazz body but they do make a stingray with a jazz sized neck (SLO option) and can also come with a neck pickup similar to the jazzes (stingray HS). Based on the sound your going after and the features you want if you ever have the opportunity I would definitely suggest trying out an HS stingray with SLO neck.

Ain't happening for a whole bunch of reasons. I'm gonna guess you didn't see my earlier quote linking to my project-thread.

But to elaborate a bit further;
  • I've gotten into tinkering and assembling parts-basses over the past couple of years.
  • I'm specifically going for an HH/2-band EQ configuration, probably with a 5-way switch of some sort. (I'm still doing some research on the switching-part)
  • The SLO option still has a very-flat fretboard radius, which is a complete non-starter for me. If I can get one, I'll probably get a USACG neck made to my particular specs.
  • I love Fender-style Jazz bodies and their vintage neck-specs...narrow and curvy.
  • I want to make something this side of "unique", maybe even "interesting".
So as much as I appreciate the suggestion, "off the shelf" just ain't gonna do it for me. ;)

Sorry for the aside, everybody! More "GROWL" plz!! drool

Growl is a little hard to define without context. For me it means the bass is pushing through enough that it can be clearly heard but it is still supporting the band.

Here you go kids, try this out for "growl". If you've never seen a hot woman in a bikini before you can thank me later!

Great video! And song. I play along this with my Spector. Just roll the blend to the j pickup and voila! It's pretty stinking close.
