Hurry before it becomes too popular. You can still buy a used MCI JH24 multitrack for about $5,000.00.

You only need to realign the tape heads every other day.

Oh yeah, you might want make sure your floor is reinforced: 2" analog machines usually weigh about 500 pounds!!

Have you actually tried this for running a Digital Audio Workstation? My guess is that it would add an unnecessary amount of overhead to your CPU and generally speaking, when building a DAW, you want to do whatever you can to reduce the processes that your CPU has to handle, not add to them.

Not to mention that there are specific hardware requirements for different sound cards so it might not work at all, let alone work at an acceptable level of efficiency.

Yeah, I was joking, but there are a lot of people who are "getting back to analog". Nothing wrong with that, but considering that 20 minutes worth of 2" tape costs about $200.00, I could buy a another bass for the tape costs of a demo - now that's a way to improve my sound more than in just a subtle "sounds warmer" sort of way - and I can play that bass on the next recording I make also!

It's funny, I never would have even dreamed of using "PC" and "love" in the same sentence until I discovered Linux a couple of months ago. I didn't mind DOS but I've always had a deep and abiding hatred of Window$. It makes all sorts of decisions for you without asking, and it's a magnet for viruses/spyware.

The 4 year old Dell that crashed every other boot with Win ME is now very happy and stable with Red Hat Fedora Core 2 Linux. I just added a second hard drive and M-Audio 24/96 soundcard to my HP P4 and hope to do some serious recording on it. I have XP SP-2 on the original HD, along with Native Instruments' Intakt looper/synth/beatbox and the free versions of Live and Reason that came with the soundcard.

On the new HD I'm planning on installing Agnula DeMuDi, a Linux music distribution with various recorders, samplers, sequencers, synths, FX, and notation software. I hope to get it up and running within the next couple weeks.

I've been doing a lot of research/experimentation with Linux in the past couple months--learning UNIX shell commands, getting familiar with the quirks of various programs. To get the most out of Linux you have to get under the hood, so to speak--tweaking partitions, finding/downloading/installing the programs you need. But unlike MS, you can put together just the system you want.

I'm not saying Linux is for everybody, but it's rightly making Microsoft very nervous due to its security/stability, minimal cost, variety of programs, and enthusiastic worldwide user base. There are definite improvements necessary before Linux becomes a platform for audio production on the level of Mac and MS (particularly in the areas of documentation and hardware support).

I'm going to keep XP on the 1st HD because that's what my girlfriend's used to, but I look forward to having fun and making music with Linux. I'll post here as I go along. Plus, if I ever have a chance to use a Mac, I'm expecting that the UNIX stuff I'm learning will be transferable to 0S X-very handy!
