You obviously know ZERO about history. Read up on child labor, the history of minimum wage, etc. Child labor laws did not exist. Minimum wage did not exist. OSHA did not exist. Workers had virtually NO RIGHTS 100 years ago. To say that they did, but that they just weren't enforced, is completely ridiculous, and just incorrect.

I think you need to read some Locke and Hume.

Rights are inherent - they aren't granted by government.

They may, or may not, be protected by a government.

btw, I have had my own business, one which required ABSOLUTE clear headedness for both safety reasons as well as performance standards. I would never consider asking to rule my helper's private lives, even though my life savings at the time was tied in that business!

I guess it's a fundamental opinion difference on relationships. I thought of people as "coworkers" and "helpers" as we all shared the work, shared the goal, and shared the benefits. I didn't look down on people as employees looking for a handout.

And that makes your life better how? I would rather make my life better than some one else worse.

In fact I've helped many people get jobs. And I've had many people help me when I was looking. I felt blessed on both accounts.

Almost three years since I left my last job, and they're still looking - and paying a pile of cash to the guy who had the job before me to come in and work here and there as an independent contractor.

Congrats. You and the OP are the only 2 people in this thread that companies can't replace.

I would have said the same thing 10 years ago. Not only would I expect to have multiple job offers, but there had better be a nice sign-on bonus. Not even close these days.

The problem with all of this is that many on "your side" of the argument see YOUR rights as "fair", but MY RIGHT to not hire you as "unfair". We all make choices, and that is EXECTLY what they are........ choices. I have them, and so do you. That's "fair" (Geez I hate that word.)

Nah, that's not what I'm saying at all... I'm not entitled to any job, but I'm qualified for a good number of them.

You're fair to hire and fire whoever you want. If you're looking for a new employee and I'm the best candidate, it'd be unfortunate for you that I would not take your pee test. You'd hire someone less desirable from a job performance standpoint because you believe recreational use of drugs outside of work is a detriment to your company. It's a choice you make... Just as me not taking the test is a choice I make.

Funny thing is I don't use drugs outside of work so your belief that I'd be a detriment to your company is also false and unfounded.

Y'all do realize that you are not weeding out most of the drug users with those tests, only the ones stupid enough to not be able to cheat and beat it. I guess that helps some but is no justification for putting everyone through such indignity.

You guys who think casual drug users can't be productive members of society, even tops in their field, are really misguided. I know top surgeons, lawyers, cops(even a small town police chief!), Wall St. wizards, software gurus, and several medal winning Olympic athletes who like to smoke a little weed now and again or maybe even gag a line or eat some psychedelics on occasion.

My argument on seat belts is that's if it's a girls body a girls choice when it's comes to my body it's my choice. How ever when I am in someone else's car, like the bosses, I use the Their House Their rules view point.

Just the other day a self proclaimed Libertarian said to me that the costs to society of people not wearing seatbelts or helmets were a significant argument against his overall position of no govt intervention.

How are you ruling their lives? They rule their lives. If your business opens at 9:00 am. are you ruling their life to require them to come in before 11:00 am?

I get where you're coming from though.
If you can't read Karl Marx that's intrusive. If the drugs you do have effect while you are at work that's not just your business.

See we know that people with gambling debts etc. bring that to work. Your imagination is failing you.:)

Take away all society government etc. and if you don't abide by the "rules" of the land you will die from multiple sources. You got weather, animals, poisonous plants, insects and reptiles. You've got bacteria and viruses. You have growing seasons. Guess our rights are really infringed upon. ;)

totally fair.
I just find some "houses" to be very unwelcoming and stay away. ;-)

No one comes to my house because I make people take off their shoes, and then wear clean house shoes that I provide for them.
I also require that people strip down to their skivvies and put on plastic jumpsuits, which I also provide.
I dont like to clean furniture, and I find this prevents that.

what I meant is that in no way would I intrude upon what they do in their free time as a condition of working with us. they could snort cocaine off a stripper's butt while in a sex swing as the "main attraction" and I wouldn't care as long as their work wasn't affected. I've worked with some REAL characters over the years and have found that most of the wild ones have brought that passion to their work as well.

I don't think that in general. I just want to choose who flies my plane or operates on me.
Just wait until your child needs an eye operation and then consider that the doctor was as high as you were last night.;)

A conversation I had with a Good 'Ole Boy Head Buyer at a major food distribution chain in the Lone Star State a couple of years ago during a sales call.

Thor - Just out of curiosity,do you drug test your warehouse employees?'

GOB HeadB, "Thor, if we drug tested our employees, we wouldn't have any employees!"

Ok, just for the record, I had to submit to a drug test and background check for my current job. Not to mention being finger printed. I do find it slightly degrading and intrusive, but it beats working for minimum wage.

Now a good buddy of mine has a medical problem which leaves in a substantial amount of pain. He is prescribed painkillers (oxycontin) for this, which he takes daily, thus making him a (involuntary) drug addict. A few years back this guy had to take a drug test for a job, but his employer looked past his addiction since it is prescribed by a doctor. Does this make his less of a risk?
