Would you pay 2400$ for a 1974 Rickenbacker??

Hi all....so I have a bit of cash in my "guitar fund". I am a collector player and have around 10 cool guitars and basses. I recently got a cool 1965 Riceknbacker 450 guitar.
I have a Jazz bass and a couple Gibson EB basses. I only like old unique stuff and each one in my collection is kind of rare and different.

There is a 1974 Rickenbacker for sale locally in Burgandyglow. Its really really clean and all original except he added a bone nut and he said the mutes don't work well. Original case has busted latches.
Is 2400$ Canadian reasonable? There are not many for sale and the ones in this color seem to have prices all over the place.
Whadyya think? A good addition to my small collection??

well..I look at at this way..you should always make your own decision about something like this..why ask others..?..personally..I wouldnt give that for the ric..I like other instruments better..so other peoples opinion about this doesnt matter..because the opinion will be based on whether they like that particular instrument..so you need to go solo on this matter..If I want something..regardless of whether it is a bass guitar or something else..I am certainly not going to ask others about their opinion..

If it's a '74, then yeah, you missed the checkerboard binding, and the toaster pickups. I missed them, too, on my October '73 4001. But, nicely aged Hi-Gains sound very good, too. IIRC, it should have the Wavy Grover tuners, though... The mute? the one on mine was stuck in the down position when I got it. A liberal dose of Kroil penetrating oil on the threads; an hour's wait; and they loosened right up. The mute pad is probably petrified, but Rick sells a replacement. It's just a scrap piece of the foam they cut out of the piece that goes under the guitar pickups (and you'll have to trim it to fit), but "waste not, want not", I guess... If a bone nut, a stuck mute, and busted latches are the only things wrong? If $2400 Canadian works out to $1400 or so US, then, yeah, I'd consider it. But, I would absolutely have to have it in my hands, to check for Negative Neck Angle before I gave the guy a dime. Ricks with the neck pickup in that position are pretty susceptible to that condition, and it's something you don't want to deal with. Oh and... because I bought it in the middle of the "no more lefties" period; and because there's always a Lefty surcharge anyway; I paid $2400 US for my Baby...

No, but Rics don't do it for me. For that price range I'd be going more custom.

Price is ok. I'd try to get him to drop to low 2s. They don't pop up very often locally. You do miss out on some of the better appointments, but the pup is a little closer to the fretboard and generally speaking that era of necks are razor thin. Tuners are correct. Some 74s had wavy grovers. Some didn't. IIRC some even had red fretboard dots. Also try to make sure he has the original pup cover. The "low profile" ones, as they aren't cheap to replace.

If you like collecting you bet!! But the player side of you will probably grab something else. I loved my 73 fireglow
With checkerboard binding. Until I played a 1962 Precision and I never looked back. The player side of me couldn't get rid of the Ric fast enough.

That's about $1870 USD, if you check the recent sold listings on eBay, it's in the ballpark... probably a CAD 2100 offer is not out of line

I'd say "yes" but I wouldn't suggest if it were sight unseen. Regarding the mute... I brought a brand new Ric in 2009 and the mutes didn't work right. I love how Rics look and sound, but I don't love how they feel. But that's just me.

I'd ask for better pictures, but yeah, if the bass is in pretty good condition, for that year and that color, $2400 is a good value.

No idea why people who would never buy a Rick for any price are even chiming in here.

I would not pay that much for a 1974 ... especially when you can get a brand new 4003s for about $1400 USD

I sold my early-mid '70s 4001 to a buyer in South Korea for $800 about 20 years ago. Why? My Precision just sounds better. No, personally would not be interested in buying another. I respect those and kind of understand those folks who think otherwise.
