Wow... Larry Graham.

Being a young gun and all, I never really have had the chance to hear much of Larry Graham's stuff, but holy cow, my eyes are opened. The way he digs in and grooves... that's what bass playing is all about. Hands down my favorite bassist. There is a video on youtube of GCS playing "Pow"... one of the coolest preformances I've seen. Very very cool. Just search "Larry Graham" and it's the first hit. Does anyone know of any place/person selling moon basses?

If you want a Moon bass like his, you'll have to enquire with the company that makes them. They're based in Japan, so communication might be tricky. They don't offer the white w/gold Jazz bass that he plays as standard, but still make them as custom orders. I love them myself, I really want one!

As for Larry though, yeah, he is a great bassist and an amazing vocal talent too. If you havn't already, I highly recommend getting "The Best of Larry Graham and Graham Central station". It's full of great songs, front to back. I bought it with a bundle of Stanley Clarke and Mark King albums and really didn't expect it to get a whole lot of playing, but I have fallen in love with it! it's worth owning for "Sooner or later" alone!

larry is a bad bad man! so incredibly cool. listen to the song "hair" for a clinic in slapping. that song makes my hair stand on end! and the sly stuff is beyond cool.

I grew up when Larry Graham was in his prime, but after fusion came out, I came to view him as less "advanced." As I continued to play, I realized that I loved fusion and jazz, but I was no jazzer, and I cam to see that Graham is an incredible player within his idiom, he displays an absolute mastery of his instrument that is as thorough as any bassist who ever played IMO.

We need to remember That Larry is often sighted as the Pop Slap player to first make it to tape , Thus influencing many of the guys who later brought it to fusion , Pop , and Jazz .

Probably one of the greatest innovators of electric bass playing in 20th century. 'Cause, let's face it, every bass player nowadays slaps. And IMO his slapping ability has never been surpassed. Sure, guys like Mark King or Vic Wooten may outdo him when it comes the speed and the sheer number of notes. But they've sacrificed groove and tone along the way. Don't know what he's up to now though since Prince seems to have returned to using Sonny T as his bass player. There was a fan based GCS website out there a couple of years ago, but it's been gone for years. Check out great bass anthems like Pow, Turn it out, Ain't no fun to me and The Jam. You won't be disappointed.
