Just had to post my excitement . I have a fender classic '60s jazz bass that I had grown to hate . Being a vintage re-issue it has a 7.25 radius ,vintage bridge etc...
I had to have the action way high to get a buzz free performance form the bass. I was sick of it! I took it in to a friend of mine and had him perform a string change and setup. I can change my own strings and usually set up a bass to my liking. However it was not the case with this bass soooooo ...
What did we find? had to recut the nut , add a spacer under the truss rod nut ,
and...
^5 loose frets that had raised. It was only noticeable when checking with a fret rocker tool ...We re-glued them and he ever so gently removed a small amount of metal on a couple of frets. they were frets 19,17,16,15 & 14 .
The difference it made?
I was able to take my action from 9/64ths and moderate relief to 5/64ths bass side and 4/64ths, treble side and a nearly flat fretboard. Maybe a shade lower...
I will start paying more attention to this ...

I am so geekin right now .
but mine doesn't hum - it YELLS at me!!! The bass itself is perfect playing, and sounds very badass Jacoish and so on, but the very loud hum is driving me nutters! I play through a T.C.ELECTRONIC BG500 2x10" combo amp, which is a very useful and reliable amp, and I have no REAL loud humming bothering me from i..e my Fender PB or other Fenders and the rest of my basses! Any suggestions? Do I have to wrap "Jazzie" in copper shielding tape? Or?
