Discussion in 'Off Topic [BG]' started by scorpionldr, Sep 4, 2008.

  1. which brings up I may have to back up my computer?? I'm pretty good about updates, but what is this gonna do to my computer??? I really REALLY don't want to screw anything up while i'm here at college where i won't be able to really take care of it
  2. Uh....nothing will change, just components of the OPERATING SYSTEM. Your data will still be there.

My Girlfriend did it, and nothing happened to her computer.
  3. Don't do it! my pc exploded after installing service pack 3.
  4. Just buy Vista.
  5.
  6. Better yet get a Mac.

5 of my PC's did this in the past 2-3 weeks. Absolutely painless. I also made my own slipstreamed XP SP3 installer CD and used to redo an older machine I have. Installed and runs flawlessly.

If you're using Zone Alarm, do some googling and turn it off. There still may be an issue there, I don't know.
  8. It's worth it. :)

Vista's great, but I'm not sure I'd recommend it as an upgrade to a machine spec'd out for XP.
  10. I agree, I just enjoy me a smart***. :smug:

Anyone with at least 3 gigs or ram can run Vista smoothly, any extra just makes running multiple processes that much easier. I have 6 gigs and it runs SO much smoother than XP ever did.

I nominate this for worst advice of this thread.

    Mac's are garbage.

However, I did just install Fedora 9 on a older laptop... we'll see how it goes.

No problem here. It took an hour from start to finish, but it was painless.
  19. well boys, I did it. I took a long nap also. which did not help anything because I still had to go through two long start ups where i basically thought microsoft finally went mad and tried to kill my computer. so far, they haven't succeeded.

My update was pretty smooth, just installed, restarted, and continued doing what I was before.
