XR-18 with Tracktion

I've been controlling an XR-18 with an old laptop that runs XP. It handles the mixer just fine. Apparently, the built in sound card on the motherboard will not support ASIO drivers, so I can't use the USB bus to the laptop to record 16 channels to Tracktion. The Behringer ASIO drivers will not install to XP according to the error message. Any ideas how I can get around this without buying a new laptop? BTW, I love this mixer. Thanks for any constructive ideas.

Upgrade the laptop's OS? I upgraded an old Dell laptop that originally ran XP to Windows 10. No problems recording with my XR18.

Pick up a copy of ASIO4ALL

This should really be a sticky, it should be one of the first thing people on a PC try. Many interface makers don't bother writing ASIO drivers because ASIO4ALL is a great solution.

Just for my understanding. As you'll use the XR18 for audio I/O, why do you care about the built-in sound card?
Your idea was to install something like Asio4all instead of the Behringer driver, right?

I had issues with Traction due to memory and processor requirements . It would not work on my laptop that had an I3 chip and 3 gig of memory but worked just fine on the one that had an I7 and 12 gig. I believe the minimum is 2a dual core chip and 4gig of memory. I did not have any problems with the drivers loading to windows XP.

I love my XR18.

I would look into whether a storage and/or memory upgrade would make the laptop capable of running Windows 10. Windows XP is 14 years only and unsupported by Microsoft and pretty much every software vendor out there. Any software you try to add or update will be a science project if it works at all, and puts your laptop at risk of serious instability.

Of course I would also seriously weigh the cost of any upgrade versus, drum roll please, a new (to you) laptop.

Thanks for the various responses. I have a newer Windows 10 laptop that I'll try next. The ASIO4ALL drivers didn't work with the old XP one. I guess I can still bring the old laptop with me to gigs for backup, since the XR-18 software loaded and works just fine on XP. My only other problem is getting the lead guitar to control his amp volume so I can get a decent signal through the DI to the mixer. There are plenty of other threads (but not solutions) about this problem. Thanks again.

OT, but "DI"? from a guitar amp?

also, you should be able to have the level to the mixer be independent of stage volume. what's going on here?
