By that principle I couldn't have any musical gear, given I'm an amateur hobby player.

Actually I'm not quite sure how it applies to pro players either, unless each new piece of equipment adds extra income in addition to existing income.

Used to be that some gigs required certain things. Without that requirement, I couldn't meet the needs of that gig. So that particular instrument/IEM/etc earned money through that gig. Over time I had a plethora of gear. When I finally settled into a more steady and stable lifestyle I moved with a trailer that was 80-85% full of gear, and the rest was personal belongings. Now, over time, I've sold items and traded items and that money or gear always goes back into other music gear. I went from having around 20 basses to I'm down to 8. But of those 8 the lowest value is ~$1500 whereas before I had several $300-$600 that just had to look the part.

Right now, I want a new vocal mic and a 5-string P... So the Aguilar rig is about to be on the chopping block.

Pretty much for me. I have 10 income earning instruments. Two telecasters with different pickup selections, a gretsch hollow body, 2 basses, and a banjo and some mandolins.a steel string and a nylon string. I teach, gig and record. I have a couple of amps. I’m considering a Stratocaster. But I need to know I’ve got enough gigs coming in. So I’m waiting to see.

Collecting and playing as an ‘amateur’ is a different thing and should be encouraged and praised. I mean that.

I do think a broader availability in that $4-500 range hooks beginner players into the instrument. I usually don’t open the daily junk from Reverb but when I do it’s full of nonsense brand P bass clone for $3k.

I need to make sure that everything pays for itself. So if I was to buy another bass (I have 2 - a 4 and a 5) it would need to make its money back within 6 months and something I’d use regularly. So an 11k USD is not a likely purchase for me. But they are beautiful instruments.
