Yamaha BB series discontinued

This thread probably exists on this forum for sure but...

What? Why did they discontinue this? BB is the best series Yamaha has ever made, I couldn't imagine the TRB to be more popular or useful than BB.

I was finally able to snatch a good deal on a Yamaha BB2025, made in Japan and can't wait to try it out.

Like the higher-end BBP34 and BBP35?

Don't know if I understand your comment but if you refer to the BB2025 than yes, it is in the same range, the main difference being in the pickups.

If it refers to whether BBP34 and 5 are still in production... Apparently those are still in production, which I did not know. Still, they have apparently discontinued the whole "bladed pickup" range, which is very surprising to me.

The 424 / 1024 / 2024 series was replaced by the 234 / 434 / 734 / P34 series several years ago, just as it had replaced the 414 etc series several years before that. So the BB range is not discontinued, it's just that, with the most recent generation, Yamaha slightly repositioned it

Yeah I figured as much by now. But still, what's up with the bladed pickups, they sound really good :)

Yamaha has a different product naming method than Fender or some other companies. Whereas with Fender, and MIM or MIA jazz bass might have different features depending on what year it was produced, Yamaha makes a new model number any time something is changed. They do this across the board with all of their instruments. It’s a double edged sword because it can make it easy to find a specific model you want (for example BB424X vs “2011 MIK BB bass”), it also makes it confusing to figure out what the current iteration of a model is. As a band teacher, it can make it annoying because when I recommend a used instrument for a parent to look for, I need to include all of the product versions so they can search for each one.

Where are you seeing that the current gen is discontinued? I've been GASing for a 734a.

Absolutely my bad, I went to their website and apparently somehow stumbled into their model archive and across the board in the BB sector a "discontinued" status has been published, but I did not realize it was a "previous models" tab on their website. They indeed still make the new BB series, bb734 included. I played the latter among others and it sounded really amazing, IMHO it was on par with standard issue Jazz Basses as far as feeling it when holding it in your hands goes. Definitely recommended, their necks and string arcs fit my hands really well, YMMV though.

I had a bb350 jazz bass and it was really good. Must of been made on a Monday. got it in 1993 $300 and it was Korean made but it kicked my USA 72 fender pj bass to the curb.
great for live and studio. intonation and bridge were perfect for 25 yrs it was my go to bass. It got ripped off a long with my Romanian tub. :( can never get either back.
I highly favour Yamaha
