The two sets of P\J pickups I was considering were the GZR and the Lollars.
...Honestly the stock pickups are sometimes better than either. Sometimes the Lollars win, but overall, the difference is pretty slim.
Which means that yeah, I'm gonna change the preamp for something more colourful.
I'm a big fan of that vintagey P-Bass low mid thing. So I'll probably grab an Aguilar for a "vintage" style pre?
Please keep in mind that the 734 has different, supposedly better pickups - same ones as in the top of the line BBP34 - than the 434 (like the one in the video). Personally, in the back of my mind I'm slightly uncomfortable with the J not being hum-cancelling, but it hasn't bothered me in actual playing situation so far. The sounds are so good, I'm not motivated to contemplate swapping the pickups.
In my case, the J pickup was pretty noisy. And I agree with the stock pickups (I kept them in my BBP34) but the ones I have in my BB735 improved it significallyI can see why some would want to change the pickups just for a sound more suitable to their needs, at least more personally pleasing to their own ears, but I also agree that the stock pickups provided sound pretty good overall anyway. The lack of hum cancelling in the j pickup isn't as noticeable to me as it is to others though.
Uh...I double checked the Yamaha website and it's got the same pickups listed for both? Please keep in mind that the 734 has different, supposedly better pickups - same ones as in the top of the line BBP34 - than the 434 (like the one in the video).
