For years, my PA of choice has been built on Yamaha DXR8s. QSC 8" version gets way more love but IMO, the yamaha is WAY more natural sounding; more transparent highs; YMMV. When I needed an amp, I went with a Trace Elliot Elf 1x10... 'cause I LOVED how light/compact it was and I figured a 10" speaker would be perfect. And let me tell you... man that thing is LIGHT. BUT, the elf is tuned for EB. You can get a reasonable sound with it for DB but... nah... it's not great. It also blew up while dialing in sounds for the first hour... this turned out to be a good thing.
I plugged my Upton Standard with Revolution Solo into one of my DXT8s... the sound was actually nice but it was clear I needed a preamp. A Fishman Platinum Stage soon landed on my doorstep and today, I gave it a whirl. There's the sound. THAT's what I wanted. Sounds lime my bass. The Fishman Stage is rad... The options on it are everything I need. Fav settings thus far are:
- HPF @ 80z @ 9 o'clock
- both mids -1
That's it. At 1100Watts on the DXR8, I can't get the volume past 9 o'clock without it being STUPIDLY loud. Would need a drummer in the room to go any further with that test.
At 28lbs, there's a few lighter rigs but this is one is a keeper for now. It sounds fantastic. There are zero drummers I couldn't accommodate... though feedback would be an issue at some level. Love the sound... gonna be hard to beat.
