YAMAHA TRB CLUB

The buffer is active so it pretty much defeats the passive tone control purpose. What you can do is plug hot wire and ground of a PU (disconnected from preamp) to an amp and see what comes out. You may also try to connect the phantom coil. If you are happy with the result it is certainly possible to add a switch and a tone control to make the bass passive.
Maybe stupid idea, but what do you think, to insert the passive tone control at the end of the circuit, right before the 1/4 output? I guess a true bypass tone control.....
 
Not exactly. The audio coils in both pickups are on the neck side. So if you flip the pickups around, it will put both coils closer to the bridge.


Concerning putting pickups upside down, bridge and neck pickup have a different part number. It may be that signal coil on the bridge PU is toward the bridge whereas the coil on the neck pickup is toward the neck. Reverting pickups will limit the pickup pan range. I wonder if we could locate the signal coils tapping with a screwdriver ?

I don't actually think it's a problem, but that's what I've seen as an easy solution for a few people.

Hmmm so I could revert pickups to get a more “bridge” sound ?

I flipped the Bridge only to get a larger Jazz-like spread

I flipped the bridge PUP on my TRB6II... only to discover both bridge and neck signal coils are TOWARDS the bridge. Easy to confirm with tapping on the PUPs with on screwdriver. Would Yamaha have flipped the coil locations between TRBxII and TRB100x ?
 
As far as I remember, yes, the TRB1000 series coils are not underneath the Yamaha logo. I'll double-check tonight, with MagPaper (paper that shows you where a magnetic field is) but if I'm wrong, then flipping them the opposite of "stock" is what made it sound better to the people who tried it.

For all I know, those people could have switched them all back - you know how forums are - sometimes you don't hear the final endpoint.

Well it would be consistent with the sound being less "honky" (I mean putting the signal coils towards the neck rather than the bridge). I should have checked before slicing the asymmetric foam beneath the pickup (the cavity is asymmetric) but I did it such that I could put it back together in case. And it was high time for a fretboard oiling !

Hey everyone - tough question but does anyone know what the mid sweep range is on the gen 1 TRB 4 internal rollers? I'm mostly interested in the 3rd position mid boost wheel for mid boost setting.
And what would also be interesting is what are the EQ curves imposed by the 2nd and 3rd position on the mid knob? Was this information ever documented anywhere?
My gen 1 TRB 4 really is a sweet unique bass.

That’s kill switch, doesn’t seems, very usefull on bass....
I guess, if I install an true bypass tone pot before the output, it maybe doesn’t change the sound at all at zero position, just when turn get some mellow tones.....

Does anyone know the nut width for an older TRB1004? There’s one for sale on Facebook in my area. It seems in pretty good condition, but I can’t find many detailed specs for it online since this exact model isn’t made anymore. It looks like a 3 piece maple neck as well, but not 100% sure.
 
I came across this one, last June ! Picked it up for $1,050, I think. I've owned about 30 basses in my lifetime and this is one the best. I love the tone. Nice mids with some solid depth to the notes. It's like blending a p bass with a stingray. The B string is about as good as you get at this scale. I have a fairly heavy hand and I can dig in a bit on this one. That says a lot, imo, for a bass made at a time where 5'rs were still pretty rare.
