Double Bass Yamahiko Double Bass Pickup

Man; this sounds way complicated; my head hurts reading it! You guys should just get a ToneDexter, make some wave maps, get rid of your mic, and be done with it!

Do tell what the ToneDexter is.. Link? video?

I am with you there, I use a Ischell Mic and I'm the closest I've ever been to being finished with pickups. I just need to rid myself of the extreme highs the microphone picks up (with a LPF soon to be bought!) and then I'm done with it..

ToneDexter | by AudioSprockets Also, a lot of discussion here:

Audio Sprockets ToneDexter

I've got one of these, and it's the real deal!

Although I have heard the "artificial" sound of the ToneDexter that some complain of, Im still gunna try it (with the Yamahiko) when I get the chance. With a 30 day return, I'll bet I could discover its usefulness or not in that time.

So I think I have a workaround for the whole lack of a phase knob (at least psychologically)...The Blend knob. I was wondering why it makes so much difference to shift the blend knob around with these two pickups (one Y one either side of the bridge) and I came up with this BS train of thought that I would love someone who knows better to disillusion me of....IF you have both pickups IN phase and blended equally (flat) that should be the same as just having them joined on the bridge, but if you favor one pickup or another, you begin changing the ratio of the cancelling effect as the strong side gets more of the mix. And likewise if you have the two pickups OUT of phase (thickest sound) blended equally then as you favor one or the other pickup, the phase ratio changes. Not as clean as having a dial just for phase but giving a similar aural picture.
When I thought of this I was using the Felix to blend the two favoring the G side with the E side phase flipped and with HPF on the E (the sound of the two out of phase and equal is thicker and less focused) I twisted the blend the other way toward the out of phase E side and it sounds great but scooped in a slightly different way. Either way having BOTH pickups going can easily get rid of or overcome or deemphasize or whatever the piezo quack and feature the frequencies you fancy. I've been playing the past couple weeks just with this setup and not mixing with a mic or Ischell and thru a MAS speaker at a gig (as opposed to direct to recording which sounds terrible with this pickup) it sounds complicated but is actually prett flat on both channels and all about the blend knob.

I am still having trouble convincing myself to get a Yamahiko, because now that there is the ischell and stick-on body mic's that actually do very well with feedback when you correctly create a suction cup with the putty to the body of the bass, It seems like the ultimate solution.

- and when I get a LPF, I don't see any reason to try any other pickups.. That will get the extreme highs out and cancel even more possible feedback issues..

I am a person who likes the sound of the upright bass for the sound of the body of the bass, not what transfers inside the bridge close to the strings..

I'm not saying the Yamahiko is bad, I am just saying, "once you go mic, every other pickup can take a hike.." :D:roflmao:

Having said that, most of the portable upright basses kill that dream of capturing the body sound..:)

Just a note to Yamahiko owners >the required imp for this pickup is pretty high at least !0Mohm. At 10 Mohm (using one side) the Yamahiko goes down to 30hz. With both sides bridged it is half that. THe Yamahiko with a good preamp like a Felix is a great sound but put it thru a low imp input and it will sound like junk. 1Mohm is not enough. @1Mohm the Yamahiko gets the bass shelved at 300hz which also sounds like junk. SO . On my Acoustic Image rick put in a 10Mohm jack on channel 1 (they come with 1Mohm input)
Im just pointing this out because it is important to get that right to even know what the pickup sounds like.

Interesting, the Fishman BP-100 and Fishman Full Circle need 10 Meg Ohm loads to function. I wasn’t aware that the Yamahiko also needs that load. The first AI’s had a 10 Megohm setting. They eliminated that on the Series 3, mostly because the Fishman’s were the only pickups that required it.

Many Fishman owners out there. I've been considering a Yamahiko and my series 3 Focus and Doubler are 1M Ohm. Turns out the Baggs Gigpro I use with my Stat B is 10M Ohm, so I'll be good if I get one.

Any other suggestions for 10M ohm units?

yes next time you send your unit to Rick just ask him to put one in that way you dont have to have a second box. I did that and he told me that he made it 1Mohm because of new pickups, but I'd sure rather 10Mohm any time....way more bass.

Well,
The FDeck will do that, along with a host of other devices, apparently you can also get Rick Jones to mod one of your channels to load at 10 Meg Ohms. Frankly, I'd do that, since you don't have to bring along a extra box. Thing is, although most will tell you that once you set it at 10 Meg, everything above that is redundant, for bass, what I've found is that somewhere around 2 Meg Ohms, to 5 Meg Ohms sounded the best with the Realist and Ehrlund. Others really like the 20 Meg Ohm setting on the Headway EDB-2.So their are varations. Personally, I don't think you could beat one of Mike's powered speakers, and either the EDB-2 or Grace Preamps. The Stat B is so different from other pickups, because it has it's own preamp, I'd sure want to know what the impedance it provides. That said, I rarely use the Ehrlund Preamp with the EAP, chosing to use the Grace Felix. So it's kind of a toss up. What I do know
is that the EAP and Realist sound to rubbery at 10 Meg. Just my take, however.

Following the derail for a second. The StatB plugged into a AI Clarus and MAS 45 is a REALLY good sound. The statB plugged into the Felix and a powered MAS18 is also really, really nice. Both combinations offer all the clarity that I look for when using microphones, but with none of the feedback. The Clarus45 combo certainly gets louder that the Felix18 combo, but frankly I rarely need that much.

I also am going to apologize to continue this De-rail, but I have the Stat-B, I have both the single element and even the double element versions. I found that the Stat-B appeared to be a better sound than the Realist, but not the exact clarity of a microphone. I'd like to see/hear a video of that if that is the case for some others. Because here is my proof.

If you listen with quality headphones to my videos, I think you'll notice the difference between these two sounds.

1st Video is the Ischell and 2nd video is the Stat-b with the same High-end Amp and High-end Cabinet. only the Pickups where switched out to show you the difference.

You tell me which one has more clarity?

Perhaps some of you with the Yamahiko can put up videos like such and then we can really hear the difference.
