I just realized you are the performer of this...sorry for the rude language. I think the problem here is that the performance (though many people on the BG side might like it) lacks basically all of the things that make a DB performance of Vanhal interesting, and doesn't really offer any alternatives.

The attitudes in some of the above posts, my friends, is why I no longer have anything to do with classical musicians.

I had an audition for a country act in Nashville. They asked to me to "play something" so I played Bach Cello Suite #2. I do this in the cello register so it takes that 24th fret on my "G" string. It wasn't what the expected, or wanted. I didn't get the gig because "I was to good".

Well, it offers and alternative , it just might not be one that you like. And that's fine.

I'm sorry if I offended you, but when you take a well known piece of the double bass repertoire and arrange it for in many ways a non-similar instrument, then attempt to represent it as somehow equal or better in a forum populated by double bassists, you're barking up the wrong tree.

I know, isn't it terrible when you don't get jobs because you're so good? Happens to me all the time. :rolleyes:

Seriously, this kind of stupid stereotype about classical musician snobbery is one of my pet peeves. No one here is being a snob. Some of us don't like it, those are our opinions, and we're happy to give reasons for our preferences.

When did I say it was equal or better or anything of the kind? It was a version, using an electric bass. Hell, if someone wanted to do an Iron Maiden song on Harpischord and oboe, why not? It's just art.

I programed the orchestral parts as closely as possible and used a bass (sometimes a cello) part playing the melody as a reference. I dropped it out after adding the bass guitar but there were a few leaks.

Common the kid in one of them is in high school so he's probably only been playing for a couple of years. A "disaster" it wasn't. It wasn't Boston Philharmonic but come on.

And it's not a stereo type. I've had many a classically trained person look down their nose at me because I play country, pop and rock on electric. The demeanor always changes once I start to talk their musical language and they realize I'm "trained" myself.

I don't know, so much hate for nothing.

Listened to it, didn't like it. No need to go around that scandalizing and all. I am sure that Mr.Doublebass Repertoire doesn't mind.

Regarding Sadowsky: Well, if you look at the way you are talking about 'classical guys', you are doing the same thing you dislike. I do not think it has to do anything with genre, I met elitists on metal concerts and classical venues alike. Same with every other...

Sorry to disappoint but I'm no kid. Been a full time musician for many years doing everything from rock to funk to jazz to country and everything in between. I just like stepping out of musical boundries and visiting other places. Sometimes I'm not welcome. lol

I don't know too many people who do solo bass plus multi instrumental pieces with vocals and also program full orchestral pieces. I'm not claiming to have the double bass skills of someone who dedicated their life to that one thing. I just enjoy trying my hand at it. Take it for what it's worth, most probably neither genius or crap. Just art.

Oh, heard the Maiden stuff. Interesting,. but, dare I say ...doesn't work. For me. : )

I may be coming off a snob, and I'm really not trying to be. I guess I may have gone a little overboard with the tone. I like pretty much every genre of music (except most rap), and I'm not saying that playing Vanhal on bass guitar is intrinsically bad at all.

I do enjoy Apocalyptica and classical covers of rock music just as I'm sure there are rock music diehards who would call that "blasphemy". I just happened to not like your arrangement it, and that's what I should have kept it to without some kind of attack on you or people arranging things in general, not that I was trying to do that in the first place.

I certainly couldn't use software of any kind or arrange music by ear, so kudos to you.

He was referring to the highschool kid in the video I posted who did a live performance of Vanhal/BG, except replacing the cadenza with "play that funky music white boy".

Zheesh guys, remember to spread the love of the Christmas season.

The guy put a lot of work into teaching himself these things. I know it's not perfect, but he's just sharing what he's done to explore different musical genres.

I say keep it up so you can expand your musicality and kudos for working so hard.
