I'm actually using that pinkie to fret. And when I apply a little bit too much pressure in some positions on the fretboard it looks like in the picture above. Most of the time it looks kind of like this:It seems the OP is not complaining of issues related to playing, just the "looks" of the strange hand contortion - which does look weird & uncomfortable.
Are you actually using that pinkie to fret, or is it just hanging out?
Producing adequate sounds with my bass while looking cool is my priority.Obviously looking cool is your priority.
Well my left hand technique is crap. Probably because my bass hangs somewhere below my belt (...) Any suggestions?
Well the point is that I can play effectively.
Although there are people that can play amazingly well with poor technique, why would you limit yourself? Also, if you've never had good technique then you can't really say that the way you are playing doesn't limit your speed or accuracy....it does not seem to limit my speed or accuracy.
Yes I play sitting and no my left hand position is OK when I play sitting.Do you play sitting and is your left hand position the same?
I would have probably done that already, but the higher it is the lamer it looks.

Why guitar players can hang their instruments low and we can't?

Who says you can't?

It all really depends on how stupid you want to look
and how you want to play your instrument.
