Absolutely, with the bass low and the neck angled up it approximates playing upright. So, the lower the bass hangs, the more angle up it needs. For me, at least. Sticking the neck out horizontally with the bass down low is a recipe for injury, eventually.

Interesting that you play progressive, and you hang your strap low. This guy plays progressive, as well, but I'd argue that his strap length is reasonable.

If you want to hang your strap low, more power to ya. You should maybe do that Robert Trujilo thing if you want it that low. Or maybe look at what Guitarists do/ how they pose and try to match that.
Thumb should be behind your bass, unless you're playing something where it's uncomfortable for your thumb to be there.

Another problem is that when I hang my bass higher my left shoulder starts to hurt.

If a guitar hurts your shoulder it means your shoulders and upper back muscles are weak. Consider doing some shoulder and upper back exercises. You'll find too that if you improve your forearm strength and grip strength your motor control for your fingers will improve and you will need to spend less time working on your finger dexterity.

In addition, look into getting a wider / more padded strap to distribute the weight more evenly.
