Yo Aguilar, where's your Micro????

...well, now that we're done arguing, I should say, in all fairness, that I love the sound of gigantic amps through ceramic magnets - I never miss a chance to play through a 500 pound rig.

But as mentioned earlier, a lightweight rig has significant benefits for me personally - and if it sounds good, it sounds good.

In fact, as one of my outfits is currently me and an acoustic guitard, I plan to buy an acoustic bass tomorrow so I don't have to carry an amp to practice - this particular guy is a consummate musician and a 'hobby-bassist', so I have confidence that he'll play softly enough that I won't need one. Also, I'm GASsing right now for a PJB 8x5 - imagine, equivalent speaker area as a 4x10, but with twice as many driver coils and weighing in at a one-hand-friendly 54 lbs!

NKUSigEp, I'm glad that you've given the other side a try and have returned to where you feel most at home. Different strokes, right?

And ElMon - you've heard right, but inebriation on your part will make the conversation fruitless on my part, so I'll go easy on you!

All I can say is make sure you directly A/B a high quality 410 (you can find them about the same weight) with the PJB cab you are talking about before you buy one::D:hiding::ninja::eek:
 
Those are both too high, and therefore skewed. Don't go by frame mounting centers, go by actual cone diameter, which is much smaller. The 18Sound 10" driver spec sheet I'm looking at right now spec's ~54 in^2, for instance. For a Faital 5 I'm seeing 17.6in^2.

So, for these particular drivers: 8 X 5 = 140.8in^2; 4 X 10 = 216in^2. Quite a bit different than what you posted, no? This'll vary a bit depending on individual driver BTW. And watch out for bad spec sheets -- the Faital 5 and 6 ones were interposed on the US Speaker website.

But what's really important is actual cone displacement, which depends on Xmax times surface area. I'll leave it to someone else to do the math...

the limitations of class D are several, but the biggest challenge for bass amplification is poor damping factor. whether or not that (and other issues) has been improved in the last few years is a matter of opinion.

my own opinion is that significant improvements HAVE been made, but not enough that I would choose a microamp for myself

I think damping factor has been addressed, to the point that it is a non issue. There may have some early Class-D designs that did not use negative feedback. Some, for instance headphone drivers in portable electronics, still don't.

IMO, even without NFB, advances in power semiconductors, drive techniques and output filters have improved damping factors to very good values.

It's so easy to get stuck in urban myth that may at one time been true, or true only in poor quality designs.

Uh. Not sure what your point is. It's quite compatible to hold your belief and have a sensible discussion on the amplification market's offerings and hopefully offerings. You are making a senseless mockery of the thread.

I mean, maybe in a 'WHAT'S MOST IMPORTANT TO MY TONE: ME OR MY AMP D0000DZ?' thread your remarks would be more appropriate, but this is pretty far off from that.
 
Oops . . . another joke goes by without a laugh . . . must be that my class-D joke supply hasn't yet reached maturity for its output to be perceived as a joke! Although, the sense of humor in the thread may have achieved micro status . . .
 
I have generally never been a huge fan of Class D amps. They just seem a little sterile sounding to me. That said, I own and gig with 2 of them. An AI Clarus, and an EA Micro. The gigs I play involve a lot of moving(elevators, stairs). I must say, the trip back to the car at the end of the night is much more fun in one trip ;) I don't think that 18 lbs for a great sounding head is too heavy however.

my shuttle, nor the tc elec, nor the gk box i've used, tried and owned sound sterile to me.

rather they lack a certain hefty grunt that only big iron seems to have. but i wouldnt necessarily say sterile.

I really don't think you can make generalizations about 'class of amp' anymore. There is just as much variation among 'class D amps' regarding fatness, warmth and tone as there is among the more traditional class A/B amps, with or without SMPS.

I do find the two executions you mention a bit 'dull' sounding (i.e., compressed a bit in the deep lows and upper treble). However, other class D executions sound very different. For example, the Genz voicing is very punchy and bright. The TecAmp voicing is HUGE down low and very, very hi fi crystal clear up top. The TC RH450 sounds like a gosh darn SVT in many ways. The Epifani 902 is hugely fat and big down low, with a very hi fi sheen up top, a bit similar to the TecAmp stuff. The Markbass LMII is a unique combination of very warm but also mid present and crisp in a more organic way up top.

The point is, these amps all sound VERY different, and they are all class D/SMPS.

You are right, and I do agree. There have been so many advancements in Class D design in the last few years that its unfair to make this generalization. While I am not a HUGE fan of the Markbass amps(primarily since I play the DB almost exclusively I don't find the tone to be what I am looking for), they aren't sterile at all.
