"You look like a bass player"

Never got the "You look like a bass player", but when I was in my very early teens I did get told that I looked like Peter Tork... Yes some of you may have to look that one up. This greatly upset me because I was Metal, and looking like someone from the Monkeys, was not metal.

Then at 18, long hair black clothing and the full metal ensemble, I had someone come up to me and asked me if I knew who I looked like. My mind flying in the direction of all the cool metal musicians I could possibly look like :) And I hear "Axl Rose" :atoz: ... Suddenly I really wanted to look like Peter Tork again. :D

Let's see...

I'm 6'10, around 375...

That usually ends the discussion. It's even better when people see me with my dad who is actually taller (7'2) than I am and has played guitar for 40 years. That short-circuits a lot of brains. Even more fun when you add in my 6'6, 270 pound brother who is a drummer...

Whoa! I'll bet the 3 of you have a blast walking into a bar together and watching the "parting of the Red Sea"!

I'm only 6', 250 lbs. I used to have a partner (back in the early '70s) who was 6'5", 325, with knife scars on his face. He was one bad mofo, and he looked it. When we'd get a call about a disturbance at the NCO club, it was fun to watch the reactions. Even though I probably looked like a dwarf next to him (I was only about 200 lbs. then), it was apparent that nobody wanted to get crossways with him.

So I can imagine how they'd react to you, your dad, and your brother! :D

When I was in the Navy, I didn't have much of anything in the way of money. So I spent a LOT of time in the base gym. Because it was free and I was po'. That's too poor to afford the whole word to be poor. So even in the military, we called it prison muscle. I bulked up to about 275 very solid pounds. I worked part time as a bouncer at a country place in Norfolk. The regular bouncers were all much taller than me. I was about 5'11 1/2" but seriously dense. It was always funny that the most obnoxious drunks would pick me to pick on because I was shorter than any of the other bouncers. But I was also stronger and had (some) hostility issues. I had fun.

Age is a funny thing. I have become bigger than when I was young, but for some reason I look more fit than the others in the band (me being in my forties, and the rest being between 35 and 60). So even if I'm not slender, I am still the slightly leaner guy when you look at the band.

I don't think I have ever been told, "You look like a bass player."

Sometimes, when I would go to the bar to claim a free soda or beer between sets, the bartender or waitress would say, "You are in the band?" lol

I guess they didn't know or care what the "bass player" looked like!

I've been told this before, some girl in my class said it to me, when I asked her about it she told me the bass player is always the geeky eccentric one. Thoughts?

well, that fits me to a tee (proud D&D/M:TG/band/music/punker nerd here)...plus I am slightly overweight, with a shaved head and beard.

People always say that I look and act "like the bass player" ,and I sort of wear that proudly

it is weird when they say that I "smell like a bass player"

Yeah, my girlfriend mentioned that the other day, she thinks Roger Waters is way more attractive as an older man than he was when he was young.

But when he was young he had that look on his face like he always had a mocking-you attitude, which is kind of what I like about him as a bassist and a musician.

Even in that shot he still looks like the bassplayer to me.

I'm 5'10" 120lbs, with curly hair a little past the ear, so I don't think many people catch on. I have had maybe one person ask if I play guitar (which I do), but never if I play bass. Funny thing is, I cannot tell you how many times I have had ask if I play basketball or run track. I can't even run a hundred feet without running outta steam, and people look at me like I'm this great athlete. I do notice, though, ever since I started playing bass, I would always set my left hand on a table with my fingers spread apart and my right hand with my first three fingers grouped together. Who knows, I only play at church right now. Maybe when I (someday) move up to band level, people will start catching on.

Did you have a stupid hat? Lots of bass players wear stupid hats...

Yes, a fedora is SUPER cool, but it isn't cool to wear it with blue jeans and a t-shirt.

I don't wear no hat but I like a plain soft tshirt good pair of jeans & nice pair of boots or shoes usually works for me I found I can dress like crap but wear a good pair of boots & people (for the past few decades) have always told me i dress nicely the truth is I shop at second hand stores or get hand me downs I haven't bought new clothes for myself in a long time run on sentence
