You opinion on a body shape ....

One thing I like about precision basses is the belly cut and comfort to your body. Is the back of the body flat? Lovely design by the way I dig it!


Edit: I just noticed you live in ATX !!! I used to live off of barton springs in south Austin in the early 90's. Is Ed Friedland still there ?A friend moved to austin (trombonist Andre Heyward , who was in the Lincoln center orchestra) is a great cat who teaches at UT now.

It looks interesting, but I think it's still in the formative stage. Try tweaking it by doing multiple sketches changing its' shape as well as the pick guard. I do think that you're on to something though. Good luck.

May also bring the bottom lobe (by the output jack) out about 1/2”.... so the rear part of the body still is angular, but not “quite” as extreme

I like it but it looked "top heavy" - for lack of a better term.

Since I’d do Dano style construction it’d be a slab

I have this Ibanez neck just sitting here, so I thought it might be fun to make a Danelectro style (pine and masonite) body that was a bit different than a standard shape.... kinda like a twist in a 60s pawn shop bass.

Here’s one of the body shapes I drew up. The pickguard is not a necessity, just an idea.

Anyway, what are your thoughts on this shape ?

Obviously this is a rough and messy mock-up...

May also bring the bottom lobe (by the output jack) out about 1/2”.... so the rear part of the body still is angular, but not “quite” as extreme... not sure

I really like the shape of a Jazz Bass. It's comfortable standing up and sitting down, both. Be careful that you don't make the upper horn too short or you will get neck dive. Leo originally made it that length to compensate for neck dive.

I like some of it.
I'd keep the top end with the cutaways but would have the bridge end, so the bass can stand easier if you ever need to lean it against something. I'd also prefer the look.
I'd leave the pick guard (the red line?) off.

I really like the shape of a Jazz Bass. It's comfortable standing up and sitting down, both. Be careful that you don't make the upper horn too short or you will get neck dive. Leo originally made it that length to compensate for neck dive.

Shouldn’t be any issues with dive. Horn ends at 13th, but Ibanez headstock is smaller than fender and neck is very light. I don’t anticipate an issue.

Very pretty. To my mind, that pickguard is a necessity.

I find the downward sloping line on the top of the PG to be distracting. Might help if you followed the contour of the upper horn a bit more, but that's just my eye.

Nice pick guard shape. I really like it. The overall design is nice too from the bridge toward the neck but I never liked angled back ends, ever. My all-time favourite shape is the Precision and always preferred it to a Jazz for that reason so you know where my head is at. For some reason I prefer symmetry at the base end but assymmetry at the horns. The main thing is...do you like it?
