I usually play my RIC for gigs. I bring a SX P-bass as a backup. Both sound pretty good to my ears

Just the one. Usually I never need a change in tone so drastic that either pickup blend and/or playing technique couldn't cover.

Edit -> As above, your audience usually can't hear the difference anyway and watching guys changing instruments and incessant micro-tuning don't make for good entertainment.

P-Bass / Flats for Old School.
Jazz / Rounds for most everything else.
Fretless Jazz / Ground wounds when I'm feeling Blue.

I have three 4 string fretless basses. You've got me tempted to slap on some pressure or ground wounds for a different sound.

I tried flats and just couldn't get into them. Which sound more like flats. Pressure or ground? Or is it not that simple?

For jazz, irish, folk I use my Alembic spoiler and Taylor AB-1. For rock I generally use my Warwick 5 string with a fretless jazz for Motown.

I play in a church band and I have four Jazz basses: regular, fretless, five string, and Reggie Hamilton. Church music covers a pretty wide range of musical styles but I don't really find that one bass suits one better than another. So I just pick a bass for a given Sunday and use that for everything. I haven't used the fretless yet, still working on that intonation thing, but I expect to treat it the same as the others when I do get brave enough to try it.
