Your Aguilar SL112's: How do they serve you?

Hi Justin

I was recently watching some video footage of the Serge Gainsbourg tribute and was really digging the sound of your Aguilar Sl's. This leads me to ask, given your collection of Aguilar gear alone, in what situations do you find yourself reaching for a rig like the 2 SL's and the AG500, and what does it offer you sonically, aesthetically, and in context with your pedals etc.

They are really good! i'm doing a Beck gig in Napa this week, and that will be my rig. My tech is STOKED 'cuz they weigh nothing and will fit so conveniently in the bay of the bus.

They sound really good with pedals. I think a direct A/B with my DB series stuff might be in order, actually.

I'd really rather use the DB's ultimately for those gorgeous mids, but the lightness of the SL's are so alluring. I think I'm getting lazy, and I have a tech doing the lifting regardless!

Thanks man. Amazing to think that such a compact setup can keep up with something like a Beck gig.

Have you found much diffrence in the mids between the DB and SL's for your liking? Being the fan of banging mids that you are, I guess either way they are cutting the mustard!

Hey Justin,

Thanks for taking the time to answer questions here at Talkbass. You hear this alot, but it is a great help and inspiration.

I own a Aguilar DB750 and love the sound of it. It's heavy but I live with it because of it's obvious qualities. On the other hand I also own a Aguilar GS412 and Aguilar GS410. I'm not a super fan of the highs in the 410, but both cabinets have served me well. BUT - my god they are heavy and my back is starting to kill me.

So I was wondering: Have you tried your DB750 with the SL's? Would you prefer the 412 for bigger venues or could you consider using your SL for this also.

Hope everything is good for you and that your studio is up and running again. And by the way: "Hurry up we're dreaming" is and amazing record!!!

Zac, yeah - they have great mids, mate. Very strong and forward. The only thing I would say about the DB's is that perhaps they take heavy distortion a bit better. They sound more natural with effects, in a way.

Stevns: well, you are most welcome. It's fun for me, and a pleasure to interact/help. Thank you for the complements on that record! I unfortunately have not tried my 750 (well, 751 for me actually) with the SL cabs...I only run it with the Tone Hammer 500 or preferably the AG500.

Things are good...finishing up the Neon Trees record, doing some Beck stuff, nicely busy. The studio is finally coming along. Should be back online in 4-6 weeks, I'd say.

Glad to hear that the studio will be back up and running soon! And definitely stoked to hear some more of your work with Beck. "Everybody's gotta learn sometime" popped up on my iPod the other day, and I was just marvelling at how you managed to balance an awesome tone with a song that needed a little restraint. I was just wondering, is there a guitar part that's echoing your bass part on that track?

I probably should have been a little more expansive about the initial comment. On that track it sounds like the rhythm guitar part is REALLY locked in with your bass part. I know you play guitar as well. Are there instances where you get called upon to double your bass parts with a rhythm guitar part in order to "chunk things up" a bit?

Great news JMJ that you are doing gigs with Beck again, almost saw you last time when you were in Europe during The Information tour. But things changed and couldn't make it.... This forum is great one. I've been thinking of getting another SL112 and now it seems that there's no reason why I shouldn't buy it.

Kicking up an ol' thread here. I hope ya don't mind. You still prefer rockin' your AG500 over the Tone Hammer 500 w/ your 112s? If so, any reason why? Faster response pairs well with the 12s?

It looks like the available options these days are the Tone Hammer 500 and the AG700, which has two fixed frequency mid-knobs and not a sweepable mid, like the AG500. (I've been using an Eden WT-400 forever, so I am a bit addicted to having semi-parametric frequency controls.)

BTW The footage of the St. Vincent tour looks amazing. What a killer band. I had hoped to go to the Radio City show, but we gotta be extra careful with two kids at home who are too young to be vaxxed. Hopefully this can happen again!

Haven't actually used those amps/cabs in years, so I don't think I could give you an educated response. I still have them around...just playing mostly old Sunn/Acoustic/Ampeg/Traynor stuff these days. Thanks re: StV band/tour. It's a fun one, to be sure. Radio City was insane.
