I hear that. I had a number of friends who had them in their cars. However, I found the rotary models to be the best, and they always had to go in the trunk. All the in-dash players in cars I've owned all scratched the crap out of my CDs. What I loved about tapes was that they were less bulky and I could dub anything onto them from any source. Certainly they weren't without flaws, but I had very few problems with them.
At any rate, the good CD changers were cool, for sure. My friend had a fancy one in the trunk of his car with a massive Rockford Fosgate system in the trunk. That was pretty hip.

I had a Honda Civic in the late 90s with a killer stereo. I swapped the stock unit out for an Alpine CD player, then added an Alpine 6 disc changer plus a 12" sub and amp in the trunk. I'd load the changer based on what I felt like listening to that week.

Once music became files instead of physical, my listening habits changed. Scrolling through my entire library at once became overwhelming, so I largely stopped listening to music in my car. Now, it's mostly podcasts. Which I don't need a fancy stereo to enjoy. My current car doesn't even have a CD player.

My formative years were in the 80's so of course I have rose colored glasses. It would be easier to say what I didn't like about it.

It's easy to scoff at the fashion but at the time it was fun and it was amazing. Even though most of my attire consisted of faded 501's and white t shirts, I still partook of the craziness.

I didn't dig bandanas and ripped jeans though . . .



The way I look at it now is our Parents afforded us the right to feel that good. They did the tough stuff plying for world change. Having grown up being taught how to duck and cover as a child, I think something like the 80's had to follow. After WW1 was the roaring 20's after WW2 was the "Happy Days" our folks were raised in. My generation had Vietnam and eventually the end of the cold war. Of course it led to excess, just like all the previous "good times". But at the start, and in the midst of it, the air was just that little bit nicer. Food was a little bit better and music, sweet music was just that little bit more personal. And if sometimes it was mostly vacuous, well that was alright

I had a Hitatchi boom box that was a real surprise. Excellent sound, and when using it to record band practices the sound had good stereo (from the built in boom box mics).
