Double Bass Your oddest combo?

I wasn't directly involved but last week at a Bluegrass festival/contest near here there was an "ensemble" of 2 harps, a flute, a fiddle, and a bass.

Well,back in the fifties we put our front line (sax, clari, trombone) in front of a skiffle group, incl washboard and box bass as the rhythm section. It got us started.

A bit later we had a 'proper' dixie/trad band. We were booked to support a top line/ top 10 trad band at the Town Hall for New Year. We were tpt/clari/tbn(me) and bjo/bass/dms. As it was New Year some of our friends came home, including two very tasty trombone players - which is why I now play bass but too long a story. We invited them to join us for the gig, so we had three trombones in a trad band. We opened and did the interval and all went well. Towards the end of the gig the headline band (same lineup as us but only one trombone) was blowing up a storm. Then I saw my girlfriend go up on stage and only ask if we could join the headliners for the last number. So they were a Dixie band of rhythm, tpt.clari................and four trombones. When it came to solos no way would we 'halve'. We wanted our moment of glory, so the number when on for ever. The expression on the face of the trombone 'star' was something to see.
