Your opinion for a good rock bass?

Just wondering what bass guitar you would choose for purely rock music. Not metal, screaming or slap....nothing of that nature.

the following is just my opinion, and id love to hear yours-

ive never really got into stingray's for rock.

to me, a P bass being played with a pick, into a "not so clean" amp is pure rock.

the stringray may work if you plan on playing with fingers, but playing one with a pick, there's just too much tops and attack. IMO.

all this coming from a guy who is quite biased when it comes to loving P basses...

Any decent bass that's setup as you need it, shielded, with a decent amp for whatever style of 'rock' your looking to play.

The player makes the style... seriously...

I'd go with a P/J, just to be on the safe side. It worked for Duff fairly well.

Dimarzio'd Fender PJ (will power neck and ultra Jazz bridge). Altho a Lakland 55-02 will get it done roght nicely as well.

try a fender jazz bass. I love the sound i get from mine, at works good for rock/pop/alternative music. So far haven't played in any style that it didn't work in. I also have several friends who play one in their bands.

anything. i'd be tempted to include upright in anything because rock covers a lot of territory.

otherwise i've heard granite makes a slightly better rock bass than marble, but there's tons of threads debating that

I'd go with a P.
or a J.
or any EBMM bass.
or any other bass for that matter.
I own a EBMM Sterling and use it for rock, I also own a Fender musicmaster modded to be a PJ set-up, and use it for rock. And I own a custom made luthier's 5 string, and use it for rock.
As you may notice, I play in a rock band!


anyway, playability and a feel that suits you!
coupled with a good sound band-wise!
so you can take any bass you feel you canuse to your advantage, there is no "Rock bass" out there!
(there may be the "rock bass player tho)

Pbass, Jbass, ATK, StingRay, G&L L2000, Ric, and a ton of others. Most basses will work well for straight ahead rock, I really can't think of any than can be made to work with it.

as stated above any bass can work. I guess for me I think P first because that's where I started. I also enjoy my P so when the rock gig comes I naturally grab it. It is also my only 4 string so it gets the "B" out of the way.

if your sure youll play nothing but rock, a p bass aint a bad idea.

but youd be better off alltogether with a J in my oppinion..a lot more versatile for the long run..

See, these kinds of comments drive me nuts. He has a Fender, loves the sound he gets, and hasn't found any style that it didn't work in...

The same exact comment could be made by someone with an MTD, SX, Gibson, Wishbass, Ibanez, Yamaha, etc etc etc etc... It's all personal and entirely dependent on what that person needs wants or 'thinks' they're getting out of the gear.

Start complex twisted outlook on Fenders...
Could... Possibly... it be that people use them because other people use them so they use the fact that other people use them to suggest for others to use them, and on and on and on and on and on.
Meanwhile many people use the fact that so many people use them to warrant why they're the best option for others to use, when in reality maybe the most people use them simply because the most people use them? Hence many more people suggesting others use them just because they use them, which everyone knows makes a bass the best bass because YOU use it regardless of why you use it. Even if you initially started using it just because someone else who used it told you that you should use it also.

PLAY THE BASS THAT FITS YOU BEST AND THAT YOU LIKE! Not the bass that others play because everyone else plays it.

I'm scratching my head trying to think of a bass that wouldn't work for rock. None really come to mind.

I think just about any bass will work fine. I tend to prefer Fender or Fender derivatives but that's just me.
