It's an Ida Nielsen signature bass. They come with that pickguard. It is cut from cloth and sandwiched between two sheets of acrylic.

My Ibanez BTB845V played with rounds and on the front pup gets close to a Pbass tone. The location of the neck pup is pretty close to a Pbass’s as well. If I can only have one axe for a gig, I’d use that bass. Plus, the 33” neck is super comfy to play.

Duesy gets very close. Especially with the worn in flats it is wearing. With a mute it’s even closer. Not saying it’s exact. I have Ps and I have tried to A-B them to see how close.
One of my old MM has a setting that works in a pinch. The real question sue isn’t the big metal in the pickups, it’s the position not being the same.

My Stealth P Bass is a Peavey Dyna Bass Unity LTD in Trans Charcoal that has been modded with Seymour Duncan Custom Vintage P & Jazz Stack V pickups, passive wiring and all black hardware. My long time Incognito P is a Carvin LB50 with EMG HB pickups. Both have the right growl and thump and hold just the right spot in the bottom of a mix.

One of the reasons that I finally let my beloved Classic Vibe 60's Fiesta red Pbass go was to not only make room for another bass but I missed I always wished it was a 5 string. I have evolved into being a 5 string player. I am not interested in BEAD or dropped D tuner or down tuning whatsoever.

Anther bass that I let go because it wasn't a 5 string was my Ernie Ball MusicMan Caprice. I waited and hoped for a 5 string and it was sadly discontinued. That was a great P/H style bass.

My Sandberg can give me some pretty convincing 5 sting Pbass tones when I solo the neck pickup and eq just right. Paired with my Fender Rumble 500 and tube DI, it really works. It does sound more like a single coil Pbass with great clarity. I can get into Wilton Felter and Sting category with ease . This bass does everything that I liiked about my CV and my Caprice, and even more.

I kept TI Flats on the CV and Super Slinky rounds on the Caprice. Ive settled on a well broken in set of TI jazz rounds for the Sandberg and it is a nice compromise between the two .

Anyone else have a bass that they use to get Pbass tones that really isn't a Pbass?

I bought this Yamaha BB735 almost a year ago and it's been my main player since then. Mostly I use it in active mode, with the blend knob centered, which produces a not particularly P-bassish sound. But I do occasionally turn the blend all the way neckwise and switch off the preamp, and boom - I've got a very nice 5 string P bass sound. I love this bass. It does everything I'd want out of a P bass, with a few extra features that expand its versatility and overall playing experience.

This BB3000 has a great P tone.

Earlier this year, I got a pickup gig with a band and one look at the set list convinced me a P bass was necessary.

I packed by CS '59 Journeyman Precision in the car, fully intending to use it on the gig, and took 'ol black beauty here as a back up. During the soundcheck I pulled out both basses, tuned them up, took them to the back of the hall, and tested them in-turn with a wireless transceiver. Now as much as I love my CS '59, the straight-up P tone of the BB sounded better in that particular venue, so I put the Precision back in its case.

The BB3000 never disappoints. It is the most versatile bass I own.

Like @Isaac_James and @ToddB1963 , I’ve found that the Yamaha BBs do an impressive job at simulating the P thing. I do keep an authentic Fender P in the stable, but my BB415 is a serious contender.

Yamaha BB's especially the original 80's models are some of the best basses money can buy. If I could handle the necks and weight, Id own one.

I almost bought one just like that and the anniversary model in turquoise blue. Those basses sound great. I just couldn't find one in stock and was too chicken to try before I buy. I wasnt sure the necks would work for me.
