I bought this Yamaha BB735 almost a year ago and it's been my main player since then. Mostly I use it in active mode, with the blend knob centered, which produces a not particularly P-bassish sound. But I do occasionally turn the blend all the way neckwise and switch off the preamp, and boom - I've got a very nice 5 string P bass sound. I love this bass. It does everything I'd want out of a P bass, with a few extra features that expand its versatility and overall playing experience.

I have a couple P's so I never bother with trying to get other basses to sound P-like, but if you're talking about that pbass "sits perfectly in the mix/mixes itself" quality with no muss, no fuss, then it's my Jerry Jones Longhorn. You wouldn't expect it from lookin' at it, but it does it. The only other basses I've owned that truly had that without a bunch of twiddling were a Casady, and a passive Dingwall AB1.

Wal Mk1 fretless. Pickup blend 1 click off centre towards neck pickup. Neck filter down, 6. Bridge filter down, 2. You wouldn’t believe it unless you heard it.

This gives me a nice warm thumpy sound. Technically a Jazz. I think it's due to the humbucker pickups.

The neck pickup on my Dingwall is supposedly configured & positioned like a P. They've obviously made some changes, but I can hear the sonic homage, as can some bandmates and soundmen.

The Roscoe Century really nails the essence of a good Fender type sound without copying the visual design very closely.

my jazz basses with the neck pickup solo'd sounds very very P-esque. I am not the first person to figure this out.

It started like this for me also but, then, I wanted to verify whether the inherent, added thumpiness of the split-coil pickup in the P-bass position was really a thing, and .. well, it was …

The neck pickup on my Dingwall is supposedly configured & positioned like a P.

I had a fiver passive AB1 - as I say above, it was very P-like. My understanding also was the pickups were essentially p-type underneath those covers.

I have a custom Fodera Emperor with the Duncan/Fodera dual coils in it. If you solo the neck pickup in passive mode and roll off some tone, it’s a pretty convincing P bass sound which has gotten me through a bunch of gigs. I’d probably say it’s like 85% p bass sound……but because I need to be ::fully:: convincing, I have a Monarch P on order which should be wrapping up production any day now.

This BB3000 has a great P tone.

Earlier this year, I got a pickup gig with a band and one look at the set list convinced me a P bass was necessary.

I packed by CS '59 Journeyman Precision in the car, fully intending to use it on the gig, and took 'ol black beauty here as a back up. During the soundcheck I pulled out both basses, tuned them up, took them to the back of the hall, and tested them in-turn with a wireless transceiver. Now as much as I love my CS '59, the straight-up P tone of the BB sounded better in that particular venue, so I put the Precision back in its case.

The BB3000 never disappoints. It is the most versatile bass I own.

Supposedly my 6 string's Delanos are quad coils and if I understood Delano correctly one of the switch positions will split the pickup, so that they have that P-pickup offset split. And this is a soapbar pickup. as well so that must be a really skinny P-Pickup. I think the turner pickups do the same but they are MM style.
