My best dual coil pickup P bass that isn't a P bass is my Fender Mustang PJ LE. It took me trying a bunch of Mustang P/Js over about a year but this one give me the best P sound I've ever heard when using just the P pickup.

yes , and although it’s still on the website , people that have recently tried to order one have been told it’s out of production.

It’s easily one of my favourite basses. Great sounding bass.

One of the reasons that I finally let my beloved Classic Vibe 60's Fiesta red Pbass go was to not only make room for another bass but I missed I always wished it was a 5 string. I have evolved into being a 5 string player. I am not interested in BEAD or dropped D tuner or down tuning whatsoever.

Anther bass that I let go because it wasn't a 5 string was my Ernie Ball MusicMan Caprice. I waited and hoped for a 5 string and it was sadly discontinued. That was a great P/H style bass.

My Sandberg can give me some pretty convincing 5 sting Pbass tones when I solo the neck pickup and eq just right. Paired with my Fender Rumble 500 and tube DI, it really works. It does sound more like a single coil Pbass with great clarity. I can get into Wilton Felter and Sting category with ease . This bass does everything that I liiked about my CV and my Caprice, and even more.

I kept TI Flats on the CV and Super Slinky rounds on the Caprice. Ive settled on a well broken in set of TI jazz rounds for the Sandberg and it is a nice compromise between the two .

Anyone else have a bass that they use to get Pbass tones that really isn't a Pbass?

The fender American Deluxe 5 string Precision I had just did not win my affection. It sounded good but the neck and string spacing were very wide. I decided to make my own. I’ve made two now and they are just about all I’m going to need for the rest of my playing life.
Both with Norstrand pickups that sound fantastic. I’ve recorded and gigged with both and they do the job beautifully.

It does. It's an '82. I rescued it a few years ago from a pawn shop where it had been hanging in a back corner for who knows how long. Picked it up for dirt cheap and did nothing to it except a setup, cleaning, and string change. I love everything about it: the look, the build quality, the neck, the weight (about 9 lbs), the balance, the slab body with rounded edges... but most of all those old Ibanez Super P-4 pickups sound fantastic. I like to use La Bella Low Tension flats on it.

I have a (ridiculous) number of actual Fender P-Basses, so my other basses are different. But I would say my JMJ Mustang and my Sandberg TM-4 can get close to P-Bass territory.

PMMAN LowEnd 5 string on the right, and "Crockett" my Miami-Vice inspired take on the Mark Hoppus Jazz on the left.

I run the LowEnd as a P 90% of the time. Ulyate pickups.

Crockett is sporting a Dimarzio Spilt-Rail P pickup, and it's definitely not your old-school/vintage P. It's a ridiculously powerful thing, with a TON of low end, while still staying clear and present up top. It's quickly become my favorite 4 string!

i got nuthin'!

i have two P-basses that are pickup-location correct, and of course, they sound like P-basses, naturally. my PJs don't sound like P-basses, but i'm never going for that anyway as they do their own thing and i play them for what they are (versatile) --- i don't even go for that P-bass sound when i'm playing my P-basses...it just shows up! so it's like: play the cards you're dealt!



but for real P-bass flavor, whether i want it or not, i use these:

Pan forward and this bass sings like a P. It's monstrous at around 8lbs. The on-board pre helps to dial in the tone.

The is Pedulla came to life after I changed out the Bart for this Nordy Big Blade. P/u is in the "P" position and it just sings!
